What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineer position at Brown Machine Group?
We have a distributed team of engineers that collaborate on thermoforming packaging solutions. The Mechanical Design Engineer role requires a team working style and the ability to operate with many other functional roles including management, plant operators, supervisors, and other engineers; the engineer must be self-motivated; able to work with minimum supervision; possesses a skill set that will enable and drive continuous improvement.
BMG is the leading food service packaging automation designer and capital equipment manufacturer servicing installations internationally. We use the latest robotic technology to build material handling and packaging of paper solutions.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates computer-aided design (CAD) models and detailed design packages suitable for manufacturing.
- Review the work of drafting or engineering records related to specific projects to improve product value.
- Create robotic End of Arm Tooling and integrated system work cells.
- Provide technical support for in-house machine assembly team when needed.
- Communicate regular and timely updates on projects in a clear and concise manner.
- Meet targets and milestones set by management, e.g., budget and schedule.
- Be adaptable to receive and respond appropriately to direction and feedback.
- Identifies and resolves model, design, and interface problems together with team.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 2 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in design of packaging and product handling equipment.
- Work knowledge of trigonometry and geometry.
- Knowledge of 3D CAD software, SolidWorks modeling package and PDM (Product Data Management software).
- Competent in Excel.
- A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

- Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards.
- Interested and able to learn new software and processes to continually improve efficiency of the design cycle.

- Hands-on work preference with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, professional, and interpersonal skills.
- Performance testing of mechanical designs.
ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 lbs at times.
- Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities (i.e. climb stairs, ladders, etc.)
