Role Overview:
The Quality Technician will play a critical role in ensuring the successful execution of the turnaround at our customer sites by overseeing and enforcing quality standards, procedures, and compliance requirements. This position is responsible for conducting inspections, verifying work meets client specifications, and maintaining documentation throughout the turnaround process. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to safety and quality excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct inspections and verify work meets established standards, specifications, and client expectations.
- Monitor all phases of turnaround activities to ensure compliance with project-specific quality requirements.
- Perform dimensional inspections, weld checks, torque, and NDE (non-destructive examination) verifications as required.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of inspections, test results, and quality-related documentation.
- Ensure all turnover documentation, including work packs, test results, and inspection reports, are accurate and complete.
- Work closely with the turnaround team, including planners, schedulers, and supervisors, to align quality activities with project timelines.
- Liaise with client representatives to resolve quality-related concerns and ensure their satisfaction.
- Conduct and/or coordinate material verification, pre-installation inspections, and final inspections of completed work.
- Witness and document pressure tests, hydrostatic tests, and other required tests during the turnaround.
- Identify and report any deviations or non-conformances from standards or specifications.
- Facilitate root cause analysis and corrective actions for quality-related issues or NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports).
- Ensure all quality activities are performed in alignment with Lubrizol's safety policies and procedures.
- Support the integration of safety and quality in all inspection and testing processes.
- Assist in the preparation of turnover packages, including final documentation and client handover requirements.
- Confirm all completed work meets contract and regulatory requirements before handover.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Associate or bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., engineering, quality management, industrial technology) is a plus.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) (preferred for projects involving welding inspections) is a plus.
- ASNT Level I, II, or III Certification in NDT methods (e.g., RT, UT, MT, PT, VT) is a plus.
- API Certification (e.g., API 510, API 570, API 653) depending on the scope of the turnaround is a plus.
- NCCER Certification for Quality Control or specific craft areas (preferred).
- 3–5 years of experience in quality control or assurance, with a focus on industrial maintenance, construction, or turnarounds.
- Previous experience with quality oversight in a chemical, petrochemical, or refinery environment.
- Strong understanding of quality management systems and processes.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes, and standards.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with clients, engineers, and craft personnel.
- Experience preparing detailed inspection and test reports.
- Ability to perform inspections in challenging environments, such as confined spaces or elevated work areas.
- Comfortable working extended hours and shifts during the turnaround period.
Three Month Goals:
Assessment and Reporting:
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current state of equipment and reliability practices at both sites
- Conduct a benchmarking study between the sites and look at initial best practices that can be implemented at the other sites
- Prepare and present a detailed report on findings and initial recommendations to the Reliability Director
Strategic Planning:
- Develop a 12-month strategic plan for enhancing reliability practices, aligned with corporate objectives
- Establish short-term priorities and projects that can be initiated immediately
KPI Implementation:
- Define and implement initial KPIs to start tracking equipment performance and maintenance effectiveness or improve existing metrics
- Establish a baseline for measuring improvements and setting targets
Stakeholder Integration:
- Meet with key stakeholders at both sites to understand their challenges and expectations
- Begin integrating the reliability projects with daily operations to ensure smooth adoption and minimal disruption
Team Building and Training Initiatives:
- Assess the current team structure and capabilities
- Identify staffing needs or realignments required to support reliability projects effectively
- Develop and begin implementing a training program focused on advanced reliability techniques and tools for all relevant personnel
Early Wins and Training Roll-out:
- Identify and implement quick-win projects that can demonstrate the value of the reliability program early on
- Launch initial training sessions as part of these projects to integrate learning with practical application, enhancing team skills and project outcomes
- Use these early successes to build momentum and gain wider organizational support
through professional training and development.
