What are the responsibilities and job description for the Boarding Attendant/Kennel Technician position at Brown Veterinary Hospital?
Summary: The Boarding Attendant will be responsible to provide compassionate and attentive care of animals at all times, maintain a clean healthy environment for the animals, while providing excellent customer service.
Working Environment:
Primarily in boarding facility, which may be noisy. Exposure to animal dander, hair, and bodily fluids/waste. Exposure to all weather conditions. (Snow, Rain, Heat, etc.)
Physical Demands:
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, lift and perform other physical tasks associated with animals care, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
Principal Duties include:
-Following all policies and procedures as well as working effectively, efficiently and in accordance with BVH policies
-Clean and disinfect kennels and animal living areas on a daily basis
-Cleaning and upkeep both inside and outside the facility, including shoveling snow.
-Completing an accurate head count of animals in your care
-Janitorial duties: laundry, dishes, sweeping, mopping, and taking out trash
-Attending all required staff meetings
-Treating all animals humanely, properly and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance
-Following BVH dress code
-Feeding and providing fresh water for the animals, including special diets as needed
- Monitoring the health of animals and recording their intake of food and water as well as their urination and defecation
-Communicating with clients via text, phone, and or email
-Walking dogs on leash in all weather conditions
-Stocking supplies as needed
-Working courteously and cooperatively with other staff members
-Following proper safety measures and OSHA standards
-Reporting signs of illness, disease, or injury to a technician or doctor
-Bathing and grooming animals as needed
-Notifying manager of any repairs that may be needed
-Notifying manager when supplies are needed
-Medicating animals as directed
Essential Skills and Experience:
-High school diploma or equivalent
-Must be punctual, reliable and responsible
-Prior experience preferred but not required
-Professional demeanor and good communication skills with the ability to work well with others in a fast paced environment.
-Strong organizational skills
-Comfort and ability to work with animals
-Technology and computer skills
-Ability to work individually and as a team
-Ability to read/write understand and follow written/oral instructions

Hours:
Shifts may vary from 4-10 hours
Full time: 38-40 hours
Must be available to work weekends and holidays
Kennel Technician Duties
- prescription diets; place needed items on the Want List for the inventory manager
- Regularly check for outdated supplies. Remove and replace them as directed by the inventory or practice manager.
- Have the physical ability to stand for the majority of your shift and lift 50 pounds unassisted and assist in lifting pets and objects over 50 pounds
- Use a considerate approach when restraining patients in accordance to Fear Free protocols
- Safely and effectively apply and use restraint devices, including muzzles, towels, gloves, snappy snare and cat bags.
- Be willing and available to stay late or through breaks, when needed, to assist with emergency or critical-care patients
- Conduct tours of the practice and/or kennel. Before each tour, ensure that the facility is orderly and staff and patients are prepared for tours.
- Maintain constant vigilance regarding open doorways that could allow pets to escape from the facility.
- Dispose of biohazard and animal waste in appropriate manner as dictated by OSHA and hospital policies
- Perform suture removals, nail trims, ear plucking and cleaning and anal gland expressions with minimal discomfort and stress to the patient.
- If available, assist other personnel with patient restraint, diagnostic services, filling prescription medications and food and preparing vaccines.
- Microchipping of pets in three steps as outlined by the hospital Standard Operating Procedure
- Recommend with understanding and perform safe laser therapy treatments as directed by the veterinarian
- Minimize radiation hazards. Use productive equipment and wear exposure badges whenever exposing Radiographs as outlined in hospital safety training.
- Perform venipunctures using patients cephalic, saphenous and jugular veins in a manner which minimizes trauma to patients and injury to veins and allows you to successfully obtain non-hemolyzed blood samples.
