Primary Purpose:
The Teacher serves as a specialized educator responsible for providing individualized instruction, behavioral support, and social-emotional learning to students with significant emotional and behavioral challenges in a self-contained special education setting. This role involves working collaboratively with other educators, administrators, and support staff to develop and implement personalized behavior intervention plans, fostering a positive learning environment that enables students to achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of core academic subject assigned Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Patience, flexibility, and resilience in challenging situations
Experience:
Classroom teaching experience, student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1.Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.
2.Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
3.Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP’s through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
4.Deliver individualized instruction tailored to meet the academic and behavioral needs of special education students.
5.Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) for students with significant behavioral challenges.
6.Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
7.Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings, contributing input related to behavioral goals, accommodations, and interventions.
8.Provide direct instruction in social skills, coping strategies, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution.
9.Utilize Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to reinforce appropriate behaviors and manage challenging behaviors in a proactive, constructive manner.
10.Plan and assign work to instructional aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.
Student Growth and Development
11.Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
12.Collect, analyze, and report on behavioral data to monitor student progress and adjust interventions as needed.
13.Document student behavior and academic performance according to school and district policies.
14.Use data to inform decision-making and to adjust strategies for continuous improvement of behavior and academic outcomes.
15.Provide or supervise personal care of students as stated in IEP.
16.Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
17.Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
18.Create and maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment that promotes positive behaviors and emotional well-being.
19.Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
20.Work closely with the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, including general education teachers, school counselors, paraprofessionals, and parents to ensure the successful implementation of IEP goals and objectives.
21.Implement crisis intervention strategies, including de-escalation techniques, to prevent or minimize safety concerns.
22.Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
23.Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Communication
24.Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
25.Collaborate with school administration to ensure that the classroom and program follow state and district guidelines for special education.
26.Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
Professional Growth and Development
27.Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
28.Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
29.Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).
