Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck currently seeks a State Government Relations Operations Manager (State GR Operations Manager) in our Denver office. The State GR Operations Manager provides a full range of project management and operations support to the Chair of the State Government Relations department and ensures that the department’s processes are efficient, cost-effective, aligned with department strategic goals and compliant with firm policies. The Manager serves as the primary liaison between the Chair and the firm’s various administrative departments with the goal of minimizing the administrative burden of the Chair. The Manager will be key to supporting the multistate GR expansion efforts, and in ensuring effective communication and coordination with the Federal GR team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as primary liaison to the department chair for all administrative and operational priorities and tasks.
- Foster collaboration within and across government relations and operations teams. Work closely with the Managing Partner, COO, recruiting and professional development, business development and marketing, lobbying compliance, and local office administrative teams to meet day-to-day operational demands of the department and its clients.
- Oversee schedule of department/sub-group meetings, draft the agendas, and participate in the meetings to ensure that follow-up occurs. Distribute meeting minutes as appropriate. Monitor the state and federal legislative calendars as it relates to managing staffing.
- Attend the DC/OMP monthly meetings and follow-up on firm initiatives impacting the State GR team.
- Oversee the annual department calendar of recurring and special meetings, events, and other activities. Coordinate attendance, logistics, and necessary materials with the Chair and the state GR business development team.
- Provide direction to the events teams to ensure compliance with campaign laws, security requirements, and reporting requirements.
- Organize and approve attendance and budgets for events, conventions, conferences, and other GR meetings that require travel and entertainment. Collaborate with the BD team in these efforts.
- Ensure that policies governing political activities are followed. Assist with lobbying compliance efforts as required and flag activities for the state lobbying compliance team.
- Maintain a database of state and local government relationships (governors, AGs, mayors, and staff). Build and maintain excellent relationships with key government officials. Ensure that BD department CRM’s and invitation lists for events include the most updated and relevant contacts.
- Monitor expenses on a monthly basis. Create monthly/quarterly reports tracking financial growth and help to develop a consistent “credit” tracking system. Flag areas for follow-up (delinquent billing/collections, outlier expenses, etc.) with the Chair.
- Support the recruiting and onboarding process for department additions, while working with recruiting and human resources
- Participate in special projects and initiatives, serving as project manager when appropriate.
- Develop and implement suggestions from department members regarding process improvement, policies and procedures.
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and at least four years relevant experience with law or policy firm operations. Experience with government relations, familiarity with the legislative process, and issues advocacy is required.
- Excellent communications skills—both written oral—with an outstanding ability to grasp new concepts quickly and explain in clear, concise terms.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment as part of a team and manage multiple competing priorities and projects, often on a time-sensitive basis.
- Skilled in managing and meeting the expectations of high-profile government officials and business executives.
- Travel and flexibility with work schedule is required.
- Position requires 5 days a week in office.
Compensation and Benefits: Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k match and vacation/sick/personal time off. We are offering a wide range salary for this role that is commensurate with experience from $110,000-$120,000.
