Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs tasks involving the installation, removal, testing, calibration, repair, and maintenance of electronic metering devices and auxiliary equipment.

Responsibilities
Completes electric meter related work independently under general supervision. Connects and disconnects single phase meters as needed. Completes meter related service requests and service orders as required. Reads electric Kilo-Watt-Hour and Demand Meters. Performs general housekeeping duties in the Meter Shop area. Tests single and polyphase meters using various electric meter test equipment. Records and maintains record forms and reports as required.
Completes other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic knowledge of the National Safety Code (NSC), and National Electric Safety Code (NESC), American Public Power Association (APPA), Safety Rules and Regulations, and City of Brownsville ordinances. Basic knowledge in reading and interpreting electric diagrams.
Basic knowledge of basic electric theory (Ohm’s Law). Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical systems. Basic knowledge of mathematical concepts to calculate meter constants, register ratios, power factors, and phasor representations.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word and Excel). Skill in the use of Volt and Amp Meters. Skill in using electric and hydraulic drills saws and cutters. Strong communications and writing skills in English, bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. Ability to learn Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Protocols and Procedures. Ability to test metering equipment.
Ability to install or remove metering equipment, potential transformer and current transformers.
Ability to install wiring for transformer rated metering. Ability to remove recording equipment.
Ability to compile records, forms, and reports. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with internal and external customers. Ability to work in close proximity to energized equipment and observe all applicable safety rules and regulations.

Education & Experience Requirements
High School diploma or GED, or U.S. Equivalency report required and one (1) year experience in an electrical related field. Trade school certificates can satisfy experience requirements.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver’s License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and high voltage exposure.

  • Based on certain prohibitions of the Charter and Statute on nepotism, no person can be hired who shall be related to any member of the Board of Directors or City Commission within the third degree of consanguinity or second degree by affinity.
