What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead ABE Instructor position at Brunswick Community College?
General Function
The lead adult basic education instructor supports fellow instructors with curriculum development, lesson planning, and classroom management. The lead instructor also ensures that course content remains relevant for students. The lead instructor teaches several sections while acting as a mentor and resource for other instructors. This FT position will assist with accreditation, administrative tasks, special events, and committees. The lead instructor will serve as a resource for the director , recommend curriculum, and meet with students to discuss academic goals and progress
Essential Duties and Responsibilites
- Delivery of practical instruction daily, (Technology, Literacy, Advocacy, Math, Budgeting, Community Living, Vocational Ed, Health & Wellness).
- Provide an atmosphere which stimulates learners to strive toward independence and self-esteem
- Assist in eliminating or decreasing any mental, physical, or social problems that may arise that prohibits or hinders the normalization process.
- Contribute to the goal setting process for students.
- Work with students and provide referral information for community resources when needed.
- Assist with pre-vocational skill training for learners and assist in developing creative learning activities inside and outside of the classroom.
- Systematically test and document progress on a bi-weekly schedule.
- Provide learning activities to cohorts of students that are functioning on different cognitive levels and have various learning styles.
- Plan and communicate community learning activities for students.
- Participate in BIP Committees such as Rights, Safety, Quality Improvement, Accreditation, etc..
- Assist instructors with lesson planning and curriculum development.
- Serve on various committees to promote quality improvement.
- Follows FERPA guidelines
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor Degree and a minimum of two years work experience in I/DD, special education, or a related field. Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of education and skill development for adults diagnosed with I/DD. The instructor must have patience, ability to communicate, and enjoy working with adults with multiple disabilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- NCI Certification
- Must be physically able to lift, carry, push, pull or other wise move objects, including the human body
- Must be physically able to push or pull a wheelchair to move individuals if necessary
