About this Opportunity
Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for a Meter Reader to join our Utility Billing team. The Meter Reader is responsible for reading, recording, and reporting water meter readings either manually or using a handheld meter reading device. Work involves:
- Performing preventative maintenance and field repairs to malfunctioning meters.
- Turning water services on and off as assigned.
- Investigating complaints of leakage from water fixtures.
- Investigating allegations of illegal water taps and reporting abnormal findings as appropriate.
- Working independently and exercising some independent judgement when completing assigned tasks.
Work also involves frequent contact with utility customers concerning new accounts, delinquent accounts, and account termination, and the Meter Reader must exercise considerable tact, courtesy, and firmness when dealing with customers and the general public. The Meter Reader reports to the Deputy Utility Billing Manager.
Education and Experience
High school diploma (or equivalent) and three (3) to six (6) months experience in meter reading or mechanical repair work; OR any equivalent combination of training or experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Valid NC or SC Driver License required.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including motor vehicles, two-way radios, basic plumbing tools, water line locators, common hand tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
