Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Primarily responsible for the care of neonates, pediatrics and those patients related to labor/delivery and high risk maternal; transports neonates into and out of the facility via ground transportation.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. Initiates assessment and reassessment based on pulmonary conditions.

3. *Provides basic and advanced ventilator management and assessment to include all modes, including high frequency and SIPAP.

4. *Monitors and administers respiratory care modalities to patients, identifies contraindications and

patient response to therapy.

5. *Develops plans for the delivery of respiratory care as directed by physician or protocols.

6. *Advises physicians regarding therapy options as patient condition warrants.

7. *Performs airway management to include intubations, tube changes and suctioning.

8. *Participates in all C-section and high risk deliveries.

9. *Performs and assists emergency resuscitation per Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) guidelines.

10. *Establishes and maintains hemodynamic lines for the monitoring of umbilical arterial lines, including indwelling blood gas monitoring.

11. *Participates in neonatal transports via ground.

12. *Performs nitric oxide and heliox therapy.

13. Gathers equipment and supplies to assist physician with pulmonary procedures, including therapeutic bronchoscopy.

14. Supports staffing and workload assignments to meet minimum productivity.

15. Participates in orientation and training of students and new employees.

16. Performs respiratory care discharge planning.

17. Provides disease/process-specific patient/family education.

18. *Performs as an active member of the NICU Assist/Rapid Response Team.

19. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

20. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

21. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient’s growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

2. Knowledge of basic and advanced respiratory equipment.

3. Knowledge of neonatal cardiac and other anomalies.

4. Knowledge of arterial punctures and capillary sticks and appropriate analysis.

5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

6. Skill in the respiratory care of neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients.

7. Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in administering therapy and/or other techniques and skills.

8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute and complex disease processes and those who are dying.

9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations.

10. Ability to provide airway management in emergent and non-emergent situations.

11. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

12. Ability to establish and maintain arterial catheters and appropriate monitoring equipment.

13. Ability to establish and maintain equipment for hemodynamic monitoring.

14. Ability to monitor and interpret cardiac dysrhythmias.

15. Ability to clinically supervise the work of respiratory clinicians and students, provide orientation and appropriate instruction in a positive manner.

16. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

17. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

18. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be licensed to practice respiratory care in the State of Nebraska. Active Registration (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required. Certification in STABLE program preferred. Minimum of three (3) years experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS) credential required or obtained within six (6) months of hire. One (1) year experience in NICU or PICU (in lieu of NPS) credential required at date of hire.

 

 

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.

 

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required. Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) required.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

 

(DOT) – Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
