Job Description

The Marshall Operations Systems, Services, and Integration (MOSSI) contract has an excellent opportunity for a Systems Engineer IV to support NASA Marshall Space Center’s Huntsville Operations Support Center (HOSC).

The HOSC is a multi-mission facility that provides the capabilities of a control center for multiple NASA missions, programs, and projects. The HOSC is uniquely structured and designed to provide mission planning and support and to provide NASA and their partner(s) and scientists remote control of on-orbit ISS experiments and tests. Data generated from these tests is collected and stored by the HOSC for future analysis. The HOSC’s systems are also used to collect, store, and allow for analysis of ground-generated data from similar experiments related to NASA’s Artemis programs.

HOSC systems are made up of several hundred servers utilizing virtual machine and containerization technologies. MOSSI manages a robust data storage system utilizing tools such as Dell Isilon. Most of the tools used by customers of the HOSC are developed in-house by MOSSI’s Software Development team and are custom-designed and built to meet specific requirements of mission planners and payload developers.

MOSSI System Engineers develop an in-depth understanding of the IT systems and the custom software developed and used at the HOSC. The applicant will work in a dynamic team environment and will be responsible for interfacing with the NASA customer and users, including commercial and international partners, to capture and negotiate requirements, user stories, and operations concepts, then drive the resulting change requests through the systems engineering lifecycle. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are required for customer interactions. Strong initiative, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are also required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work effectively with the NASA customer, users, including commercial and international partners, to capture and negotiate requirements, user stories and operations concepts, then drive the resulting change requests through the systems engineering lifecycle.

  • Perform high level requirement assessments and facilitate the detailed assessments performed by the MOSSI technical organizations.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, justifications, guidelines, and controls for work components.
  • Lead a cross-functional team of engineers to achieve specific project milestones within technical and schedule constraints.
  • Create and/or update all documentation for design and change instruments where attention to detail is emphasized.
  • Create vendor specifications for required operations hardware and software systems. Review vendor quotes to ensure that they address the specific vendor specifications.
  • Perform analysis, assessments, trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
  • Provide systems engineering support to the MOSSI implementation organizations.

Qualifications

This position requires strong skills in systems engineering, information technology, and software development. The successful applicant will have a BS Degree with 15 years of relevant experience or 20 years of relevant experience with demonstrable skills in Information Technology.

Required Skills:

  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to work in a team setting with minimal supervision while professionally representing the MOSSI organization.
  • Able to apply engineering principles to investigate, analyze, plan, design, develop, implement, test, and evaluate required operations hardware and software systems.
  • Able to apply engineering principles to perform functions such as software system architecture design, system integration, configuration management, and quality assurance testing.
  • Able to prepare and review engineering and technical analysis reports, change proposals, and other technical documentation.
  • Good problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are required for routine interactions with the customer and other organizations.
