Job Summary:
Performs a variety of tasks by the overseeing of inmates, ensuring they remain in confinement, supervising their care, searching for contraband, and monitoring their security during daily activities.

Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for inmate transportation and daily security observation duty
- Provides documentation of inmate transfers, incidents, information, and any rule violations
- Must remain certified and efficient in firearms, taser, defensive tactics, and jail operations
- Responsible for general care and supervising the delivery of meals to the inmates
- Ensure all duties are carried out according to all applicable laws, ordinances, and policies of Buchanan County
- Responsible for having thorough knowledge of and oversee the rights of inmates
- Oversee administering of any medications to inmates, as prescribed by a physician
- Supervision of any inmate visitations and communications
- Ensure that all proper procedures and documentation are accurately completed for all lawfully arrested individuals
- Transport inmates to court in a separate building
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- May be required to operate office equipment, including but not limited to: copy machine, computer, phone, etc.
- Regularly prepare and review documents and polices
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Education/Experience:
High School diploma required.
Additional Requirements
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Must be able to become certified in; firearms, taser, defensive tactics, and jail operations
- Must possess a valid Missouri operator’s license at time of appointment
- Must pass a background check - no felony convictions
- Applicants must meet minimum qualifications of the FBI and MSHP CJIS Security policies
Required Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
- Applicants must be able to meet the strenuous physical demands of law enforcement activities, including but not limited to: arresting combative individuals, multiple flights of stairs, and have normal hearing with or without a hearing aid.
- Proficient in the use of all issued firearms, impact weapons, chemical munitions, stun devices, etc.
- Ability to classify, compute, and tabulate data and information following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of judgement
- Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information when required
- Knowledge and use of any internal computerized monitors, security equipment, telephones, intercoms, recording equipment, etc.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of Citizens, Government representatives, Attorneys, and County personnel.
- Ability to exercise the judgement and decisiveness in situations involving a variety of duties subject to frequent change
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, organization skills, and handle multiple incidents simultaneously
Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
Some work in an office setting with a controlled environment. Exposure to highly intense situations. Physical activity includes bending, walking, lifting, standing, running and stooping. Exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, loud noise, and fumes. May have exposure to blood and other bodily fluids. Visual acuity and color perception a must. Normal hearing ability essential. Occasional intense physical contact with inmates. Physical strength to subdue combative individuals. Must refrain from using tobacco products while on duty.
