We are looking for a Tool Room Lead to help us create our world famous knives.
SUMMARY
The Tool Room Lead is responsible for day-to-day operation of the Tool Room. This person works with Production Leadership to prioritize workflow, ensure efficient completion of tasks, lead continuous improvement projects, and complete all needed preventative maintenance. The Tool Room Lead must also be a fully-qualified Tool Room Machinist as they will complete routine work in addition to leadership duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following-
- Ensure employees understand safety procedures and the use of personal protective equipment
- Maintain an efficient work schedule to produce quality parts in a timely way to eliminate waste and increase the value of Tool Room talent to Buck
- Increase productivity and consistency throughout the Tool Room by creating solid models and programs for recurring products, fixtures, and machine components
- Work with manufacturing engineering to standardize tooling and fixtures across the floor to improve operational function and flexibility
- Work with engineers to ensure tooling and dies are created in the most cost-effective way
- Implement continuous improvement ideas from kaizens or employee suggestions to make production safer, improve quality, and increase efficiency. Identify other processes on the production floor where improvements can be implemented
- Oversee material purchase requisitions made for tooling and material to ensure consistency toward long term goals rather than one-time use
- Review Tool Room spend against budget and participate in setting annual material budget
- Serve as the point of contact for engineering questions regarding prototype and R&D capabilities
- Assist maintenance with machine improvements during preventative maintenance or retrofits. This includes standardizing components and setting replacement schedules for wear components on older machines
- Oversee the cleanliness and maintenance of the machines in the Tool Room
- Work with Operations Manager to evaluate Tool Room staffing and plan for future talent acquisition
- Train new employees on technical skills and operational efficiency in the Tool Room
- These duties and responsibilities are in addition to the duties of a Tool Room Machinist. The Tool Room Lead will fulfill Tool Room requests in addition to their duties above
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for overseeing 2-3 Tool Room Machinists. This includes reviewing and approving time cards and PTO requests.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent communication, ability to work well with others
- Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to troubleshoot technical problems with CNC operations, tooling and dies, and machinery
- Ability to read and interpret work from sketches, schematics, specifications, blueprints and job orders
- All qualifications for Tool Room Machinist
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Associated Degree or technical degree or equivalent combination of experience & education
- 5 years’ experience as a Machinist
- Experience with Solidworks
- Experience working within a manufacturing environment a plus
