Buckeye Partners is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Reliability Engineer for our Corpus Christi processing and storage facility. The position will focus on short term and long-term reliability strategies for the critical mechanical equipment including components such as compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, and other equipment associated with a naphtha processing facility.

Role Summary

The Mechanical Reliability Engineer is responsible for but not limited to, Mechanical Reliability Program Management at our Corpus Christi processing facility. The facility assets include LPG and butane chiller systems comprised of Frick packaged refrigeration systems with Frick rotary screw compressors and prior experience with industrial refrigeration and/or screw compressors is desired. This role will support operations and project management with troubleshooting, material selection, pump hydraulic calcs and sizing, and preventative maintenance. Responsibilities include:

Responsibilities & Essential Functions Include

  • Facility Operations Support: Support operations with rotating equipment trouble shooting, retrofit and system re-configuration. Key responsibilities include:
    • Identifying operational, mechanical, or hydraulic problems related to rotating equipment and identify options for repair, replacement, or upgrades.
    • Performing system hydraulic analysis and design using software and by manual methods as needed.
    • Be available to support emergency response activities related to compressors, pumps and motors when requested.
    • When requested by operations, manage contract service provides performing repairs and upgrades to rotating equipment including scope development, contracting and schedule / cost management.
  • Mechanical Equipment Reliability Program Management: Responsibilities for development, implementation and ongoing ownership of mechanical equipment reliability programs. Key responsibilities include:
  • Contract management of third parties associated with equipment reliability, i.e. vibration program, risk assessments, RCA, FMEA, oil analysis, etc.
  • Develop and own annual budget allocated for reliability program. This will involve proposing budget recommendations to stakeholders and seeking approval.
  • Program level identification of critical rotating equipment across the Corpus asset base through risk based assessments.
  • Develop critical spares strategy for critical equipment working in collaboration with various operations teams.
  • Develop and update preventative maintenance procedures in accordance with recommendations from critical equipment risk and mitigation assessments.
  • For critical equipment, develop and implement data driven mean time between failure metrics using available work order maintenance records.
  • Monitor equipment health and take pro-active actions through a robust vibration monitoring and oil sampling program.
  • Maintain and track program KPIs and report monthly to leadership.
  • Collaborate with other rotating equipment engineers across Buckeye to develop best practices for rotating equipment.
  • Capital Project & Expense Project Support. Support Corpus and corporate project managers to ensure successful project execution of maintenance and capital projects in Corpus facility. Key responsibilities include:
  • Maintain contact and provide support as needed to project managers through the project life cycle project development, execution, commissioning and close out.
  • Review project designs including equipment selection to ensure the correct equipment has been specified and identify any hydraulic concerns or issues.
  • Support project managers to correctly specify equipment to insure it meets the latest Buckeye standards, support bidding, review bids and make recommendations for award.
  • When needed, generate hydraulic pump and system calculations to ensure systems are sized correctly for intended operations.
  • When necessary audit vendors and or repair shops for compliance with Buckeye Standards. In addition and as necessary, visit vendors, manufacturers or repair shops at critical hold points or during performance tests.
  • Organizational Training & Communication: Provide training to other Buckeye personnel to expand their knowledge of hydraulic and refrigeration systems. Training platforms and locations will vary but could include routine meetings, events, summits, when installing new equipment, changing the way existing equipment will operate etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Ideal candidate will have 10 years related experience that includes responsibilities for mechanical reliability of compressors, pumps and/or refrigeration packages.
  • Vibration Analyst Category II or III certification preferred
  • Understanding of pipeline and terminal terminology and operations preferred.


Certificates & Licenses

  • Eligibility for TWIC card as dictated by facility and governmental regulations

  • Knowledge of Pipeline and or Terminal business or systems preferred


Essential Functions

  • This position requires the ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and or/quantitative productivity standards.
  • This role requires the ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • This position requires compliance with all personnel policies.
  • Candidate will need to accommodate up to 10% business travel as needed across Buckeye’s asset base.


Physical & Safety Requirements

  • The employee may be exposed to a hazardous working environment at field locations and must be able to enter and climb above-grade storage tanks.
  • Ability to climb ladders (approx. 50 feet) and work comfortably and safely at heights for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors for extended periods of time during all weather conditions.
