Dog Trainer with Canine Behavior knowledge needed
Job Summary:
Buckeye’s Mission is seeking a dedicated and experienced dog trainer with canine behavior certification to work with our rescue dogs as well as serve as the primary trainer for our clients’ dogs. As a Dog Trainer, you will be responsible for providing training and behavior modification services to dogs and their owners as well as rescue dogs and the staff/volunteers. Your expertise in animal handling, dog training techniques, and customer service will help create a positive training experience for both dogs and their owners as well as rescue dogs and the staff/volunteers. The successful candidate must be a CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA with a certification in canine behavior. The candidate must be comfortable working with fearful, anxious, reactive, resource guarding, or ’aggressive’ dogs. The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school in positive reinforcement training.
Duties:
- Conduct one-on-one training sessions with dogs of various breeds and sizes
- Assess and evaluate dogs' behavior to develop personalized training plans
- Teach basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, down, come, and heel
- Address specific behavioral issues such as aggression, separation anxiety, excessive barking, resource guarding.
- Utilize positive reinforcement techniques to encourage desired behaviors
- Provide guidance and support to dog owners and staff/volunteers on effective training methods
- Monitor dogs' progress and adjust training plans as needed
- Maintain accurate records of each dog's training history
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of dog behavior and training principles
- Experience in pet sitting or working in a shelter setting is a plus
- Excellent customer service skills to effectively communicate with dog owners and staff
- Ability to handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments safely and confidently
- Knowledge of other animal handling techniques is beneficial
- Familiarity with pet grooming or animal restraint is advantageous
- Basic understanding of veterinary care and health issues related to dogs
