Job Description: Spirit of Buffalo is a premier tall ship offering sailing experiences on Lake Erie in Buffalo, NY. The 73' schooner operates seasonally and provides guests with unforgettable excursions, hosting both leisurely day sails and private events. We are seeking a dynamic Operations Manager/Captain to oversee all staff, budgets, and operations of this historic vessel. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the maritime industry, leadership skills, and a commitment to providing exceptional customer service while ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
Operations Manager/Captain Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the Spirit of Buffalo from May through October.
- Captain Tall Ship
- Develop and implement an overall operations strategy to ensure efficient management of resources, schedules, and staffing.
- Set policies and procedures, ensuring safe and enjoyable sailing experiences for guests.
- Recruit, hire, and train new staff, including U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captains, deckhands, bartenders, and customer service representatives.
- Track operational budgets, manage expenses, and optimize financial performance.
- Act as the primary community liaison, working with local schools, organizations, wedding planners, and corporate partners.
- Monitor and enforce health and safety regulations on board.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and performance evaluations to all team members, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Regularly report to upper management regarding the financial and operational health of the business.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a Operations Manager, or similar executive role, preferably in the maritime or tourism industry.
- Knowledge of business processes, including customer service, human resources, finance, and procurement.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with a hands-on approach to managing operations.
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with maritime experience and a U.S. Coast Guard Master’s license.
Compensation:
- 6 months $22,000-$32,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
