The Lewelling Shelter and Drop-In Center, set to open in March 2025, will serve chronically homeless individuals. The center comprises 29 interim - shelter rooms and offers drop-in services (showers, laundry, meals, meetings and individual meetings) five days weekly.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Drop-in Center Program Coordinator, supervised by the Program Director, plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, healthy, and positive environment for guests of an Interim Housing and Drop-In Center located in San Leandro, CA. This position is pivotal in fostering community engagement and connecting guests with essential services. Responsibilities include overseeing service development for drop-in guests, conducting assessments, and facilitating access to basic needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee services for Drop-In Center guests, people experiencing homelessness, with a focus on basic needs (meals, showers, laundry, clothing)
  • Facilitate groups, classes, and life skills sessions
  • Assist guests with self-identified goals, providing referrals, advocacy, and follow-up
  • Complete intake and exit assessments for guests in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)
  • Create and manage Drop-in Center activities calendar
  • Uphold program rules in an environment of support and empathy, ensuring that interactions with guests are respectful and professional
  • Communicate effectively with guests, direct reporting staff, peers, supervisors, and funders
  • May conduct welcome sessions for new Drop-in Center guests, including orientation to the rules and regulations of the site
  • Address guest concerns and conflicts promptly and respectfully
  • As needed, help to mediate client and Resident Advocate staff issues and make decisions in accordance with program policies, procedures, and protocols while reinforcing trauma informed care, de-escalation techniques, and motivational interviewing
  • Manage site capacity, ensuring safety and ensuring that daily guest services are tracked and logged
  • Maintain guest confidentiality
  • Attend all-staff meetings and assigned trainings
  • Direct client service/program responsibilities in addition to the above, as needed
  • Work collaboratively with site staff to ensure a continuum of services
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with other social service agencies for continuity of services
  • Maintain professional relationships with community partners, volunteers, suppliers, vendors, and contractors

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with unhoused people
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with a diverse population, with sensitivity to differences in culture, religion, sexual orientation, race, age, and physical and mental
  • Ability to facilitate group sessions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, with the ability to effectively use and manage relevant databases.
  • Quick learner of software tools specific to shelter operations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following is representative of requirements required to perform to the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation. Please note that staff members may be called upon to clean up biohazardous materials.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Work an 8-hour workday.
  • Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling.
  • Work requires bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
