Position Summary
The Urban Agriculture Assistant will support the implementation and maintenance of our urban agriculture projects. This role will assist in the daily operations of urban farm spaces, contribute to sustainable farming initiatives, and support in the facilitation of educational workshops. The ideal candidate is passionate about urban agriculture, enjoys hands-on work, and is eager to engage with the community to promote food sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Position Details
- Seasonal (April-October)
- Part-time, non-exempt position
- 15-20 hours per week
- Reports to the Hope Grows Manager
Job Duties
- Assist with the planning, planting, maintenance, and harvesting of community gardens and urban farm spaces.
- Support the setup, breakdown, and facilitation of educational workshops and outreach activities related to urban agriculture, sustainability, and healthy eating.
- Provide support with volunteers, community members, and other stakeholders and expansion of urban agriculture initiatives.
- Monitor plant health, manage pests, and ensure the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
- Maintain accurate records of garden activities, crop yields, and program participation.
- Assist with the distribution of harvested produce to local residents and community organizations.
- Support the development and implementation of new urban agriculture projects and initiatives.
- Support special events and community outreach initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Urban Agriculture Coordinator.
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
- Passion for urban agriculture, sustainability, and community development
- Previous experience in gardening, farming, or related fields is preferred
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed
- Willing and able to attend training sessions, as needed
- Basic knowledge of plant care, pest management, and sustainable farming practices
Physical and Other Requirements
- Able to drive and maneuver a passenger van
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move around for extended periods of time
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30-40 pounds
- Help with special programs and events, assist in planning, setup and breakdown
- Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity
