Building on Dreams is looking to fill a couple of full time and part time shifts working with individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Independence, MO area. There are multiple shifts currently open. Please apply for more details.

Job Summary: Support Employees are responsible for providing a comfortable and normative environment in the home and/or community, while ensuring the person feels safe and loved. Employees should support the person to have the opportunity to develop to the fullest extent of his or her abilities and desires. They will establish a warm and personal relationship with each person they are supporting and encourage active participation in the community. They will also encourage responsible decision making.

Reports to: QDDP and/or Program Assistant Director and/or Program Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

With the person:

  • Get to know the person you are working with and build your relationship in positive ways.
  • Support the person to feel safe and loved while they are with you.
  • Support the person to develop connections and relationships.
  • Provide a comfortable and normative environment in the home and/or the community.
  • Work with people supported on all scheduled shifts. Stay at work until all relief coverage is at the home.
  • Encourage/Role Model the skills each person needs supports with. Document, implement and evaluate supports as required and requested.
  • Implement all support Plans, protocols, policies and procedures, while ensuring safety as a priority.
  • Monitor health needs ensuring that preventative health care practices are utilized, including encouraging healthy lifestyles. Also, ensure immediate treatment for illness or accident.
  • Ensure all medical appointments scheduled during a shift you are working on are completed. Bring all medical paperwork, including medical/dental detail, physician's orders medical summary, to the office within 24 hours.
  • Ensure the administration and recording of medications in accordance with Agency policies, including what to do if medication is refused. Ensure controlled substances are being counted and documented on the Controlled Substance Count Sheet.
  • Work with all individuals and ensure a high standard of personal care is maintained, in a respectful manner, while also being a role model in this
  • Make available to all people the opportunity to participate in integrated community act Assist the person to learn new skills, make responsible choices and be involved in what is happening in their lives.
  • Assist/teach/role model each person with self-care, budgeting, banking, cooking, household management, socialization, shopping and recreation as required.

For the Agency:

  • Review the Plan and know the information contained within Document on outcomes, safety practices, assessments, event reports and shift reviews.
  • Responsible for proper financial record keeping and accounting for certain funds (PSA, grocery, household, checking accounts). Also, ensuring all monies are accurate and accounted for at all times, with receipts for all purchases.
  • Be sure to count all money at the beginning and end of each shift and sign off on all appropriate documentation at the time. Submit these to the office in a timely manner.
  • Record and real all relative information in the communication books on a daily basis as required and sign off that it has been reviewed.
  • Complete all required documentation, ensuring the confidentiality of the person supported, employees and agency records and reports.
  • Attend all Plan reviews, house meetings, employee development, and in-service trainings as required.
  • To maintain good communication and relationships with. families, co-workers, people supported, community agencies, along with the Manager/QDDP.
  • Report all emergencies to the On-Call immediately.
  • Ensure all pertinent information is passed on the supervisor during regular business hours.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED at a minimum.
  • Must pass abuse and criminal record screening.
  • Must have valid driver's license and current car insurance.
  • Must have 3 positive references- at least 2 from previous employers.
  • Must have access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Job Skills and Abilities

  • A strong commitment to the Philosophy of Gentle Teaching, and the policies, procedures, and philosophies of the agency.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully with people who have a disability, as well as people associated with them, such as family members, support coordinators, and people in the community.
  • Networking skills to assist the people supported in making connections in the community.
  • Must have the ability to write reports and document data using correct grammar.
  • Must have the ability to present reports and information in an understandable manner to a group.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work within a team setting, with an emphasis on leadership, self-initiative, patience, maturity and tact
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule if necessary based on the needs of the person.
  • Must possess the skills that the person being supported is working on, i.e., if a person needs support with cooking, the person must know how to cook.
  • There may be other specific qualifications depending upon the needs and wants of the person, i.e. if the person is hearing impaired, the employee may need to know sign language.

Additional Information:

This position may require transportation of the person we support in a personal vehicle. This position may be required to work in stressful environment working with people in. crisis situations. The ability to function independently and under pressure is an ongoing expectation of this position. If a task is delegated by a supervisor or Primary Employee, it is expected that the Support Employee will complete the delegated task.'
