What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Attorney position at Building Service 32BJ Benefit Funds?
Summary
The 32BJ Legal Services Fund provides legal advice and representation to eligible 32BJ members and their dependents. Reporting to the Supervising Attorneys and the Director of the Legal Services Fund, the Staff Attorney will provide legal services to the members of Building Service 32BJ who are eligible under the union’s Legal Services Plan.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage a full caseload of family law cases from intake through resolution.
- Have knowledge of substantive and procedural family law.
- Draft legal documents such as petitions, motions, orders, and correspondence.
- Represent clients in court hearings, mediations, and trials.
- Develop legal strategy, obtain case records, conduct research, and assemble evidence.
- Negotiate settlements in clients' best interests.
- Conduct case preparation including interviewing, investigation, document review, and witness preparation.
- Discuss case progress with supervisors and provide reports summarizing case status.
- Maintain ongoing contact with clients, opposing counsel, advisory parties, colleagues, and courts through telephonic, electronic, and written communication.
- Update case files timely, including, file notes, correspondence, and file records; and complete other duties as necessary to maintain client files.
- Maintain confidential materials and information associated with all clients.
- Provide clients with supportive legal advice and guidance.
- Supervise (work product only) paralegals and legal interns.
- Have knowledge of areas covered under the Legal Service Plan.
- Attend member information meetings under the direction of supervisory personnel, including travel as required.
- Complete other duties necessary to maintain client files and meet case deadlines.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree and admission to the New York State Bar.
- 2 years of dedicated experience in family law litigation, including representation in contested cases.
- Sound ability to analyze complex legal issues and exercise sound judgment.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with experience presenting before courts and agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a high-volume caseload while maintaining client satisfaction.
- Knowledge of legal software and experience with electronic filing systems.
- Professional appearance and demeanor.
