About the Position
We are currently seeking a highly qualified and experienced CPA to function as Controller. This is a senior leadership role responsible for financial operations of the firm. This position reports to the Executive Director.
The Controller, who will be based in our Springfield office, will provide strong, practical and strategic financial direction to the Executive Director and Managing Partner, as well as leadership to the accounting staff. The Controller will: develop the annual operating budget and provide keen oversight of all accounting and financial analytic processes; develop and improve financial procedures to maintain the fiscal health of the firm; drive our financial systems; reduce risk via balanced compliance and risk mitigation; foster a highly responsive culture within the accounting team; and provide exemplary services to clients across practice groups. The Controller is expected to work closely with the Executive Director and the senior leadership staff to create and implement budgets that reflect the firm’s strategic goals.
Education and experience:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting required, MBA preferred.
· Certified Public Accountant or Accounting Degree in taxation a plus.
· Five-plus years of progressive leadership with broad-based Accounting/Finance experience and management in a legal setting.
· Direct supervisory experience of accounting teams and strong team-building skills.
· Proven financial leadership, problem-solving and communication skills, coupled with the ability to excel and achieve results in a fluid and fast-moving environment.
· Competency managing daily financial operations and strategic projects in a multi-office law firm.
· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to explain fiscal concepts and reporting to a non-financial audience and provide appropriate guidance in making good financial decisions.
· Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm, composed manner.
· Strong decision-making, follow-up, follow-through, priority setting and attention to detail skills.
· Demonstrated ability to practice good judgment.
· Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.
Job Responsibilities including but not limited to:
· Coordinate and execute all financial and tax-related activities for the firm.
· Develop the annual operating budget.
· Monitor the operating budget and prepare monthly financial reporting.
· Work with others collaboratively to support the financial success of the firm.
· Prepare partner distributions.
· Prepare profitability metrics, and the preparation of financial data and analysis needed for ongoing and annual compensation decisions.
· Apply advanced computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office (advanced Excel) and financial reporting software. SurePoint LMS and Checkwriters experience a plus.
· Direct, oversee and manage the accounting team’s functions: conflict, intake of new matters, payroll, benefits, billing, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
· Exemplify a strong client service philosophy to provide support in a highly responsive environment.
· Establish priorities consistent with the firm’s expectations.
· Possess impeccable ethics and a familiarity in dealing with highly sensitive data.
· Form and maintain banking and third-party relationships.
