Bullis School seeks a Middle School Dean of Students to support our caring and inclusive community starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. The Dean serves as the Middle Schools primary resource and advocate, facilitating the successful integration of all components of the student experience at Bullis including academic achievement, personal accountability, and social dynamics. In coordination with the Assistant Head of Middle School, the Head of the Middle School, and other members of the student support team, the Dean plans and assists with student programming that fulfills the collective needs of the student body as well as individualized guidance to address unique student circumstances and promote growth. This is a 10-month position reporting to the Head of Middle School and involves teaching one to two classes or equivalent co-curricular duties, depending on need and expertise.

Grounded in a sense of caring and community, Middle School students embrace academic challenges and dive deep into academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits that stimulate individual and collective growth. Teachers create the conditions for discovery and increasingly independent students do the rest. Middle School students thrive in an engaging environment that encourages creativity and discovery through a strong foundation of core academic courses complemented by Bulliss three Signature Programs Entrepreneurship; STEM; and Visual and Performing Arts. Experiential Learning also plays an important role in the Middle School experience from experiential education programs that kick off the start of school to week-long Discovery Days adventures in the spring. Facilitated by highly skilled faculty and a leadership team who understand adolescents and are passionate about teaching the whole child, Middle School students develop academic confidence, leadership ability, and organizational skills in a safe environment.

Essential Functions

  • Establish and maintain professional and trustworthy relationships with students and families to ensure a successful Bullis experience
  • Teach one to two class blocks
  • Co-plan weekly grade-level meetings with the Assistant Head and Head of Middle School
  • Monitor snack, lunch, and community-wide events that require adult presence
  • Support the Assistant Head of Middle School and Head of Middle School with addressing student conduct

Student Guidance

  • Build a rapport with students through daily interactions, positive tone, and modeling of Bullis three tenants - caring, challenging, community
  • Be responsible for oversight of student discipline and the fostering of good conduct
  • Address community-wide issues of conduct, social climate, tone, respect, equity, and inclusion through the development and execution of special programs and intervention with individual students
  • Oversee daily student expectations including attendance, dress cod,e and assigned infractions
  • Provide a timely and sensitive bridge between parents and the school and establish a cooperative working relationship
  • Meet and work effectively with the Middle School Counselor to coordinate social and emotional support for students
  • Facilitate the transition of new students to the community; plan and participate in the new student program, Bullis Start Strong

Student Life

Advisory Program

  • Work with the Middle School Counselor on the advising program
  • Assign students to advisory groups
  • Prepare weekly advisory sessions and identification of themes/topics
  • Communicate with grade-level advisors to facilitate discussion and execution of advisory curriculum

Support and advise the Student Government program

  • Implement Middle School activities that generate school spirit as well as a positive and supportive community
  • Work with the other divisions to support any school-wide community service initiatives
  • Support the Assistant Head of Middle School with weekly Middle School Assemblies

  • The ability to successfully collaborate with a broad range of community members to solve problems with logic and creativity
  • The ability to make difficult decisions, even when unpopular, take responsibility, and set boundaries in the face of persistent demands and concerns

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in grades 6-8 with experience in leadership roles

Preferred:

  • Masters Degree in education leadership or related field
  • Proficiency with Windows and Apple OS, Microsoft Office, cloud computing (Google Docs, etc.), and other productivity and media software

Compensation and benefits are competitive, with an anticipated salary range of $90,000 to $105,000.
