Bullis School seeks an Upper School Learning Specialist to contribute to our vibrant learning community for the 2025-2026 academic year. This position guides students in tenth grade in cultivating effective learning habits and supports the academic growth of all students in our caring and inclusive community. Candidates should have deep knowledge of learning differences, current and accepted brain research and methodologies, and demonstrate cultural competency in their work with students, families, and faculty. Additional opportunities to supervise after-school activities are based on need and interest. This is a 10-month position reporting to the Director of Academic Support.
* Start Date Flexibility: While the primary appointment begins for the 2025-2026 academic year, qualified candidates may be considered for an earlier start during the 2024-2025 school year, depending on availability and mutual agreement.
The Bullis Learning Support department is a highly collaborative team that fosters a culture of continuous growth and improvement for themselves and the students they work with. The Learning Support Specialists develop strong, trusting relationships with students and aim to help students appreciate their unique strengths and areas of challenge so that they may develop effective, efficient strategies to grow as learners. The Learning Support team is guided by the philosophy that developing independence and self-advocacy skills is paramount for students. They partner closely with faculty to facilitate the effective use of accommodations and share best pedagogical practices, skillful classroom management, and methods of differentiation. Learning Support Specialists maintain communication with parents and work with outside professionals to ensure each student is reaching their full academic and personal potential and achievement.
Duties & Qualifications
Essential Functions
- Create an individualized action plan for a caseload of students requiring additional support in collaboration with other members of the learning support team
- Conduct a welcoming, inclusive, legally sound and interactive process with families seeking accommodations
- Use formative and summative practices to assess and analyze student strengths and needs; document student progress and achievement; design and implement appropriate instruction to facilitate learning and growth
- Support classroom teachers in the implementation of personalized learning plans
- Collaborate with the other learning specialists to recommend tutors, psychoeducational evaluators, etc. as needed
- Collaborate with the school testing coordinator to help with approval for accommodations on standardized tests such ACT, SAT, AP, etc
- Perform educational screening/assessment services in house and make referrals for outside evaluation
- Remain current with accepted and appropriate instructional theory, practice and research, as well as emerging practices for cultivating neurodiversity, twice exceptionality, and assistive technology
- Develop solid knowledge of the curriculum including the essential information, concepts and skills so as to better support students and assist classroom teachers.
- Establish and maintain frequent communication with parents about their child’s academic, social and emotional progress and needs
- Participate with the team of instructors in the Bullis Start Strong Program
- Collaborate with and coach teachers on best pedagogical practices, skillful classroom management (routines and procedures), and differentiation to ensure a safe, orderly, positive, enjoyable, and productive learning environment accessible to all students
- Assist in preparing and implementing a strategic plan for on-going intervention and remediation as needed in our 9-12 program
- Attend weekly meetings for students receiving Instructional Support including the Student Review Committee with members of US Administration
- Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings, committee meetings, school functions, and professional development activities during and after school hours as needed, appropriate and assigned
- Uphold the philosophy, principles, policies, and procedures of Bullis School
- Represent Bullis School positively in the school community and the wider community.

Education and Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum 4 years teaching experience of students with diagnosed learning differences or with experience as a learning specialist focused on students in grades 9-12
Preferred:
- Master’s or terminal degree in education, education administration, special education, psychology or related field
- Knowledge of the latest assistive technology
Compensation and benefits are competitive, with an anticipated salary range of $65,000 to $100,000.
