Our General Services department is looking to fill two full-time positions for Maintenance Technician I. The department will be moving to a new building in Woodfin this July. Each day in this role offers something different, as the tasks vary daily, so you'll never have the same routine. Team collaboration, strong communication skills, and effective time management are essential to succeed in this position. This is a great entry-level position for individuals with a background in construction. Purpose of the position:
The purpose of this position is to be responsible for performing limited semi- skilled manual work in the maintenance, operation, and repair of County buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities.
Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED, and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance trades, such as HVAC, electric, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, or painting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 years of age or older.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Essential Functions of the position:
- Maintain, replace, and repair County buildings, facilities, and grounds including, but not limited to, HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting, welding, and light electrical work.
- Perform general carpentry work as part of construction, remodel, repair or alteration of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, and screens.
- Maintain heating and cooling systems, alarm systems, water systems, and remove/replace doors.
- Review work orders, construction plans, specifications, and technical instructions.
- Apply knowledge of safety procedures when operating tools and working with machinery and moving mechanical parts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, and tools associated with mechanical and maintenance trades.
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to various maintenance trades.
- Ability to understand simple sketches, penciled layouts, and rough plans associated with building maintenance and repair work.
- Some skill in the use of a wide range of hand tools and shop equipment
- Ability to effectively communicate and comprehend/determine problems.
- Ability to complete work on a timely basis observing all safety rules.
- Ability to exhibit sound judgement and decision making
In order to uphold internal pay parity and equity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current Buncombe County employees. All new employees are paid according to their years of relevant education and experience above minimum requirements for the position and employees have the opportunity to obtain pay increases via cost of living increases and promotions.
