What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transfer Truck Driver I position at Buncombe County?
Purpose of the position:
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled to skilled work in the operation of a large transfer truck used in the transfer of refuse and debris
Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High School diploma or GED, and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks and automotive equipment with complex operating requirements; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Training and Experience: SWANA Operator training required within first twelve months of hire.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina; CDL-A license
Physical Requirements: The work is primarily very heavy work requiring exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is performed outdoors in seasonal weather conditions and in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to self or others.
Essential Functions of the position:
Operate a transfer truck to transfer refuse and debris from the Transfer Station to the County Landfill or other designation as assigned.
Dock trucks for loading at the Transfer Station and dumps refuse at the Landfill.
Perform routine maintenance on assigned trucks that includes, greasing, cleaning, changing tires, and checking trucks daily to ensure safe operations.
Perform duties as a Transfer Station Operator on an as needed basis which includes operating sets of controls on the packing units and cleaning and washing down pit and dumping areas.
Perform duties as a Solid Waste Scale Operator as necessary.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Abilities:
Knowledge of the operation and general maintenance of heavy transfer trucks.
Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions in the operation of transfer trucks.
Knowledge of the proper methods of loading and unloading vehicles and large equipment.
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules related to the operation of transfer trucks.
Ability to operate transfer trucks skillfully, safely, and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
Ability to detect needed repairs and to make necessary operation adjustments.
Ability to make minor maintenance and repairs to transfer trucks and other transfer station equipment.
Skill in the use of various motorized heavy equipment, power, and hand tools.
Ability to follow oral instructions.
Ability to work effectively in an unpleasant working environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to use small, medium, and heavy equipment and machinery.
