Job Description
Each day as a CAD Technician / GIS Specialist begins with reviewing project assignments and emails to understand priorities set by engineers, geologists, or environmental scientists. Tasks are typically project-driven and involve working with AutoCAD to create or modify drawings, such as plan view maps, cross-sections, and detailed specification drawings for geotechnical and environmental projects. GIS-related tasks may include using ArcGIS to generate maps displaying various environmental, geological, or hydrogeological data.
Throughout the day, there may be data entry tasks, such as inputting boring log data into standardized templates for engineering analysis. Collaboration with team members is common, whether through direct discussions, responding to feedback on drawings, or adjusting designs based on new project requirements. File organization and document management, including saving work in the appropriate formats and ensuring proper version control, are also part of the routine.
As work progresses, priorities may shift based on deadlines, requiring adjustments to ongoing tasks. Before wrapping up for the day, finalizing drawings, generating PDFs, and submitting completed work for supervisor review ensures that all deliverables are on track. Task management and communication play a key role in balancing multiple projects effectively.
