Job Description

Each day as a CAD Technician / GIS Specialist begins with reviewing project assignments and emails to understand priorities set by engineers, geologists, or environmental scientists. Tasks are typically project-driven and involve working with AutoCAD to create or modify drawings, such as plan view maps, cross-sections, and detailed specification drawings for geotechnical and environmental projects. GIS-related tasks may include using ArcGIS to generate maps displaying various environmental, geological, or hydrogeological data.

Throughout the day, there may be data entry tasks, such as inputting boring log data into standardized templates for engineering analysis. Collaboration with team members is common, whether through direct discussions, responding to feedback on drawings, or adjusting designs based on new project requirements. File organization and document management, including saving work in the appropriate formats and ensuring proper version control, are also part of the routine.

As work progresses, priorities may shift based on deadlines, requiring adjustments to ongoing tasks. Before wrapping up for the day, finalizing drawings, generating PDFs, and submitting completed work for supervisor review ensures that all deliverables are on track. Task management and communication play a key role in balancing multiple projects effectively.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Experience or Education in AutoCAD - Proficiency in AutoDesk systems, specifically AutoCAD, is essential.
  • Experience or Education in ArcGIS - Ability to use ArcGIS software for mapping and data visualization.
  • Basic Computer Skills - Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, such as Excel and Word, and the ability to create and email PDFs and photos.
  • Ability to Use Templates - Experience in working with drawing templates to ensure consistency in design and documentation.
  • Mapping and Drawing Skills - Capability to create plan view maps and detailed specification drawings related to geotechnical and geostructural elements.
  • Data Entry Skills - Ability to enter boring log data accurately.
  • Time Management and Reliability - Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and a proven record of responsible and reliable work.
  • Basic Arithmetic Skills - Comfortable working with numbers for measurements and scaling in drawings.
  • Good Written and Verbal Communication - Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
  • Teamwork Skills - Ability to collaborate as part of a small project team.

While a technical degree in engineering technology, GIS, or construction engineering technology is preferred, the job does not explicitly require a degree as long as the candidate has relevant experience or training.
