Our collection is home to more than 12,000 works of art by more than 680 artists spanning the late 19th century through the present. It includes the world's most extensive collection of artworks and ephemera by acclaimed watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967).

1. Position Summary:
This job incorporates visual and written content creation and community engagement. This position will have a highly public voice and platform and requires top-notch writing and storytelling skills, a passion for connecting the public to art experiences, sound judgment, great attention to detail, and an interest in innovative approaches to connecting with diverse audiences. The role involves the off-hour monitoring of and response (when necessary) to social channels.
2. Essential Functions:
Content Creation/Storytelling — 60% (variable)
- Produce/edit written content for digital and print publication (including but not limited to social media, webpages, email newsletters, press releases, community calendar entries, fundraising communications, etc.)
- Create, edit, & distribute photos, video, and stories via website and social media
- Support the curatorial team by working with artists, musicians, and collaborators to gather content for artist biographies and artwork records for the website
- Help maintain the website CMS
- Using the Burchfield Penney Brand Guidebook and design templates, create promotional graphics for events and exhibitions for digital and print distribution
- Participate in communications and branding meetings
Community and Web Engagement — 35% (variable)
- Foster a positive online community by responding to social media comments and inquiries, and resharing relevant content in a timely manner
- Actively and enthusiastically represent the Art Center on-site and out in the community by attending exhibition openings, cultural & community events, and meetings
- Build relationships with local artists, creatives, community organizers, and media/content makers to share our stories and encourage meaningful collaboration
- Use web analytics and visitor survey feedback to improve community engagement, social media, and email campaign performance
- Regularly research arts events in the community and organize key staff attendance
Other duties as assigned — 5% (variable)
- Work on projects outside of regular activities
- Participate in full-staff activities
3. Work Schedule:
A healthy work-life balance is important at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. A typical work week is 37.5 hours Monday-Friday, but employees are sometimes required to work after hours or weekends for special events. Weekly hours should be flexed as needed. This role requires the ongoing and regular off-hour monitoring of and timely response to social channels to ensure positive public perceptions and interactions.
4. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated excellent writing, storytelling, and copyediting skills
- Ability to quickly create compelling, brand-aligned content for social media
- Proficiency in using Instagram, Facebook, Mailchimp, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom, Video-editing software
- Experience maintaining a website CMS
- Ability to maintain organized digital file systems
- Ability to capture and edit high-quality photos and video
- Superb communication skills; personable and diplomatic in working with diverse constituencies and inspiring participation from partners, media outlets, and community members.
- Enthusiastic about teamwork. Ability to work well with staff, interns, and volunteers to promote the mission and goals of the Center.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail, and efficiently manage several work assignments and tasks simultaneously
5. Required Qualifications (Education & Experience):
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience of five years
- At least three years of experience in content creation
- Passion for the visual arts
- Knowledge of regional art, artists, and cultural organizations
6. Compensation:
Burchfield Penney Art Center is committed to fair, competitive, and industry-informed pay for our employees. The salary range for this position is $43,000 – $53,000 (based on experience) and includes health insurance, paid vacation and sick time, 403(B), and additional benefits.
