This announcement is for multiple seasonal Range Technician positions for Montana Dakotas. Includes Weeds, Monitoring range positions. No separate announcements.

This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred monthly throughout the announcement period. Qualifications:

GS-4: You must possess six months general experience and six months specialized experience at the GS-3 or equivalent level. General experience that demonstrates my ability to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Specialized experience examples: assisting in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; assisting in range inventory and field data collection; assisting in the operation of a livestock ranch or in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; surveying public lands for the presence of noxious weeds; locating and treating noxious weeds with designated herbicides; assisting with inventory and monitoring of noxious weed infestations; under supervision maintaining spraying equipment and preparing accurate records of all treatment.

Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of study above high school that included 12 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wild land fire science.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: include monitoring the conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; conducting range inventory and monitoring activities that include field data collection; works in the operation of a livestock ranch or in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; surveying public lands for the presence of noxious weeds; locating and treating noxious weeds with designated herbicides; participates in inventory and monitoring of noxious weed infestations; maintaining spraying equipment and preparing accurate records of all treatment.

Education: Successful completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in math is creditable.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

GS-6: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: handling the compliance of conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; based on guidance from specialist participates in or routinely leads range inventory and monitoring activities that include field data collection; inspecting and inventorying condition of existing range improvements; plans the operation of a livestock ranch or in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; surveying public lands for the presence of noxious weeds; locating and treating noxious weeds with designated herbicides; performs inventory and monitoring of noxious weed infestations; maintaining spraying equipment and preparing accurate records of all treatment.

Education: Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

GS-7: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-6 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting in the compliance of conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; leading range inventory and monitoring activities that include field data collection; inspecting and inventorying condition of existing range improvements and identifying needed range improvements; implements the operation of a livestock ranch or in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; assisting with mapping, monitoring, and developing livestock grazing or weed management plans; independently performing all aspects of treating noxious weeds with minimal supervision while occasionally serving as a crew lead; locating and treating noxious weeds with designated herbicides; inventory and monitoring of noxious weed infestations; maintaining spraying equipment and preparing accurate records of all treatment.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the cut-off date of the applicant list to be reviewed.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the off ice to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
