Job Description
The head swim coach position is an opportunity to gain hands on experience for applicants interested in the field of coaching. You will shape swimmers aged 5-18 progress over the course of a 7-to-8-week summer season and play a vital role in their success. This job contains challenges and requires creativity, flexibility, and organizational skills. An ideal candidate demonstrates a passion for swimming, commitment to the success of a team, and on-the-fly problem-solving skills.
Job Area/Responsibility
- Write and carry out sets and practice plans for swimmers aged 5-18
- Use observational skills and knowledge of swimming to analyze swimmers’ performance and offer personalized instruction with focus on proper technique
- Interact with swimmers of different ages daily and employ social/emotional strategies to boost their success in and out of the pool
- Conduct small group swim lessons with younger swimmers, focusing on basic swimming and water-safety skills
- Engage and communicate professionally with swimmers’ parents
- Assign and coordinate parent volunteer roles required for swim meets
- Sign swimmer up for competition events based on interest and observations from practice
- Communicate season plans and important information with co-coaches and delegate when needed
- Facilitate swimming meets through a variety of tasks, including escorting swimmers to their races, watching and taking notes on races. And debriefing with coaches and swimmers
- Help maintain pool area by clearing pool deck, setting up equipment for meets, and being a thoughtful host for visiting teams
- Work closely with the BCC clubhouse to coordinate scheduled events, pool space, and more.
- Manage team responsibilities to the Champlain Valley Swin League and Vermont Swim Association (VSA), including attending coaches’ meetings, adhering to deadlines for meet entries, coordinating with the clubhouse to pay team dues, and more
Education
- Highschool Diploma or GED needed. Some college level coursework in education or sports education is preferred
Qualifications
- 5 years competitive swimming experience
- Understanding of body movements and functions necessary for competitive swimming
- Strong leadership and management skills
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications strongly preferred
Work Schedule
- 35-40 hours a week
- Early June through early August (Occasional planning hours between January and May might be required)
- Monday-Friday, 8am-11am
- Some Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 4-8pm for meets (5-6 meets per season)
- Occasional weekends, especially late July and early August all day for leagues and state championship meets
- Overnight stay on-site sometimes required (multi-day end of season meets)
Compensation & Employment Definition
- Title: Head Swim Coach
- Direct Report: Aquatics Director
- Compensation: $23/HR depending on experience
- Work Schedule: June-August, Monday-Friday, occasional weekends
