Description

SUMMARY

 

The parent educator will work directly with parents of children in the home, providing parents with information regarding child development and effective parenting techniques. The parent educator will look at the family as a unit, use a strength-based approach, and provide support to the family using screening tools, referrals, and information from reputable sources.

 

 

EDUCATION

 

The PAT program requires that, at a minimum, parent educators have a high school diploma or general equivalency degree (GED) and at least two years' previous supervised work experience with young children and/or parents. The PAT program prefers parent educators to have at least a four-year degree in early childhood education or a related field, or at least a two-year degree, or 60 college hours in early childhood or a related field. It is recommended that parent educators have prior experience working with young children and/or parents.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

1. Exceptional organizational skills; proficient computer skills; interpersonal relationship skills; the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; manage several projects simultaneously; and to adjust to frequently changing demands.

2. Possess communication skills in order to verbalize the needs of troubled youth and the agency’s philosophy to the public and be able to communicate and work effectively in a professional manner with other social work personnel.

3. Be able to communicate and work effectively with agency personnel and community and state agencies in a productive and professional manner.

4. Ability to respond to and manage crisis situations.

5. Must have a valid state issued driver’s license and submit to an intensive background investigation.

6. Must be self-motivated and task oriented.

7. Must be comfortable speaking in front of small groups.

8. Must be willing to travel on occasion.

9. Must attend ALL required PAT Training.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities for Parent Educator/Home Visitor of Burlington United Methodist Family Services shall encompass the following:

1. Recruit families with children for the program in their certification range (i.e. Prenatal – 3 and 3 – Kindergarten).

2. Schedule visits monthly or twice monthly according to risk factors of the family. The goal is 100% of families receiving 100% of visits (12 visits/year per low-risk families or 24 visits/year per high-risk families).

3. Prepare age appropriate and needs priority activities and information for each visit. Parent educator will discuss and set goals with families that helps decide emphasis at each visit.

4. Use screening tools as required by PAT National and federal funding, including but not limited to Developmental screenings (ASQ-3), Social-Emotional screenings (ASQ-SE), Depression screenings, Domestic Violence screenings, Substance Use, HOME Inventory, Life Skills Progression, Child Health screenings, vision screening, and hearing screening tools. Make appropriate referrals as necessary to supporting organizations and agencies.

5. Document all contact with families via online database systems. Documentation must be completed within 48 hours of the visit or contact.

6. Maintain files with accuracy.

7. Promote Parents as Teachers locally and regionally, attending meetings, educating agencies, organizations, and the public and obtain MOUs.

8. Administer Parents Satisfaction Surveys as required with all families in program.

9. Caseload should not exceed 60 visits per month for full time or 30 visits per month per part-time parent educator. The number of families on caseload is dependent on experience of the educator, how many high-risk families, and distance traveled to family home. Caseload minimum will be set by supervisor.

10. Parent educators will participate in 2 hours of reflective supervision for full-time or 1 hour of reflective supervision for part – time per month.

11. Parent educators will participate in 2 hours of separate staff meetings per month.

12. Plan and facilitate group connections. Programs are required to have a minimum of 12 group connections per year.

13. Parent educators will be registered with WV STARS and participate in a minimum of 20 continuing education hours yearly as required by PAT National and federal funding.

14. Parents educators must individually pass annual performance review (APR) with no less than 60%.

15. Home visits and paperwork will be monitored for quality and fidelity for accreditation requirements and CQI requirements.

16. Parent Educators will train on and bill Family First through the Social Necessity/Atrezzo Portal and incorporate into home visits as required.

17. Work 40 hours a week with extra hours in evenings or weekends as needed for special events and group connections. Hours can be worked in different combinations as needed for special events and group connections.

18. Can support the mission and vision of Burlington United Methodist Family Services as evidenced by compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.

19. Supports and facilitates positive interaction with others as evidenced by: professional maturity, respect for others, a team-centered approach, maintenance of confidential information, and an appreciation of a multi-cultural work place.

20. Required driving position.

1. This position is defined as one that will require you to drive a motor vehicle as part of your daily work. This position does allow the employee to drive motor vehicles owned or leased by Burlington United Methodist

Services, Inc., and to transport employees and residents when and if necessary.

21. Perform all other duties that fall within the parameters of this position.

22. Funding is based on grants and can be terminated or extended without notice.
