The Burn Institute’s mission is to educate and inspire communities to reduce burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma. As a team, we bridge the efforts between fire and burn prevention awareness in our community and support services for burn survivors.

About this Position

The Burn Institute is seeking an organized and motivated individual who wants to work with supportive colleagues doing fulfilling work for our communities of San Diego and Imperial Counties. The Community Outreach Coordinator is an integral member of the Prevention Programs team, responsible for engaging the community through partnerships, education, and events. This position manages relationships with community partners to advance the Burn Institute’s mission and oversees the organization’s volunteer programs.

The role reports to the Director of Prevention to align outreach initiatives, coordinate fire safety programs, and ensure resources are accessible to underserved communities.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in community outreach, volunteer management, or event coordination (nonprofit experience preferred).
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management systems (Salesforce experience preferred).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Passion for fire prevention education and community service.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, relationship building skills and natural customer service. Strong ability to work independently and effectively communicate with colleagues, clients, board members and the public
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish, speaking / writing) a plus

Responsibilities

40%  Community Partnership Management

  • Serve as the first point of contact with all community partners and organizations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, including local Fire Safety Councils, fire stations, and other relevant organizations.
  • Coordinate with community partners to staff community outreach events such as Fire Station Open Houses and fire safety awareness initiatives.
  • Coordinate with community partners to ensure the successful execution of outreach programs and events.
  • Work with Fire Safety Councils and fire stations to develop and promote fire and burn prevention education materials tailored to local communities
  • 30%  Volunteer Program Management

  • Recruit, onboard, train, and manage volunteers for various prevention events and programs.
  • Develop strategies to enhance volunteer engagement and retention.
  • Maintain a volunteer database and track volunteer hours and activities.
  • Coordinate volunteer recognition events and activities.
  • Facilitate and manage onsite volunteer groups, including ARC and LIFE volunteers, ensuring effective integration into programs and events.
  • 10%  Third Party Fundraising Events

  • Develop relationships with community partners to encourage and support third-party fundraising events.
  • Provide guidance, support, and resources to partners hosting fundraising events on behalf of the Burn Institute.
  • Ensure proper acknowledgment and appreciation for the contributions of community partners.
  • 10%  Outreach Research & Development

  • Identify additional community outreach opportunities to further the Burn Institute’s prevention programs.
  • Create and implement new initiatives to reach underrepresented or underserved communities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to support these initiatives.
  • 5%  Collaboration with Prevention Program Coordinators

  • Work closely with the Fire Safe Seniors Coordinator and Prevention Education Coordinator to align community outreach and fire safety education efforts.
  • Develop strategies for disseminating fire prevention information to a variety of community groups, including seniors and schools.
  • 5%  Other Duties

  • Assist with special events and other organizational activities as needed.
  • Represent the Burn Institute positively at community events, meetings, and engagements.
  • Position Requirements

  • Able and willing to work flexible hours as needed, which may include weekends or evenings (Reasonable notice will be provided for work outside of normal weekday business hours.)
  • COVID-19 vaccination
  • Ability to pass a background check prior to employment
  • Possess and maintain California Driver’s License and automobile insurance
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work at desk workstation offering seated or standing position
  • Must be able to travel within San Diego County
  • Compensation and Benefits

  • Full-time / Non-Exempt position / 32-40 hours per week
  • Salary : $24-26 / hr.
