JOB SUMMARY
Working with the Black Rock Station (BRS) Manager and the DPW Construction Coordinator, the Specialty Construction Manager will provide oversight and management of the Specialty Construction Department, which includes the Mobile Asset Construction Crew and the Mobile Asset Rehab Crew.
This role will manage the logistics, budgeting, and purchasing of the Specialty Construction Department and be responsible for the planning and hiring associated with the Mobile Asset Construction and Rehab Crews.
Collaborating with the BRS Manager, the Specialty Construction Manager will strategically analyze the condition of and needed repairs for existing mobile assets and requests for new mobile assets. They will then develop a plan for construction and any needed design modifications.
The Specialty Construction (container / box build) Assistant Manager and Specialty Construction (rehab / projects) Assistant Manager will directly report to this role.
This temporary role is :
- From March - April : Part-Time (10 approximate hours per week), Non-Exempt, based fully remote .
- From April - October : Full-Time,Exempt, based on-site out of Gerlach, NV .
- From October - October : Part-Time (10 approximate hours per week if part-time), Non-Exempt, based fully remote .

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
DEPARTMENT & TEAM MANAGEMENT (50%)
Oversee the planning, logistics, budgeting, and hiring for the Specialty Construction Department.Review and prioritize mobile asset requests. Consider timelines, department workload, and the operational need of requests. Work with the BRS Manager to address concerns and to facilitate any needed communications with requestors.Contribute to the Powered Mobile Assets DatabaseWork from existing designs and produce working drawings for requested projects detailing building processes, materials, and required labor.Coordinate staffing levels and build logistics to ensure that approved buildings on the Mobile Asset Build List are completed in a timely manner. Maintain continual communication with the BRS Manager regarding build status; communicate any concerns with progress as they arise.Identify and coordinate directly with material suppliers to ensure that large material orders meet the quality, pricing, and scheduling needs of Specialty Construction.Work with Purchasing to ensure that orders for Specialty Construction are fulfilled.Maintain diligent oversight of budgeting for 732 Specialty Construction and proactively discuss any potential adjustments or concerns with the BRS Manager promptly.Work closely with Black Rock Station (BRS) management and crew to ensure that smooth operations and interactions are maintained between them and the Specialty Construction projects and crew. This includes coordinating crew living situations, material deliveries, build site logistics, and heavy equipment usage.Monitor the social atmosphere of the Specialty Construction crew and support a fulfilling, respectful, safe, and productive environment. Address and document any personnel issues promptly, and communicate any concerns directly to the BRS Manager.As needed, work with the Personnel Managers to recruit volunteers.Assure that work hours are appropriately recorded by Specialty Construction crew managers.See that crew managers complete weekly work schedules for their crew. Weekly schedules should be shared with the crew and BRS Manager, at a minimum, of one week prior to actual work dates; update with adjustments as needed and share any revised schedules with the crew as soon as possible. Update applicable changes in meal requirements with the on-site cook.Know, share, and use the proper pathways of communication for escalating personnel issues. Learn how to and, as needed, create proper supporting documentation regarding such matters.Establish and oversee the maintenance of a clean and safe work site; ensure that all team members are provided with and utilize the necessary OSHA-approved safety equipment.Actively add to and support a positive atmosphere and crew experience for Specialty Construction crews; guide individual and team efforts towards successful completion of the season and build projects.MOBILE ASSET BUILD, REHAB (20%)
Work with the BRS Manager and Coordinator in February to review and plan for the Mobile Asset Build and Repair List for the season.Produce working designs and build plans that balance individual project requirements, budget, material and engineering constraints, and the capabilities of the Mobile Asset Build crew.Directly monitor the progress of the Mobile Asset Build crew. Work with the Mobile Asset Build Assistant Manager to ensure smooth and timely operations and to troubleshoot any logistical issues; immediately report any concerns to the BRS Manager.Complete an end of season report detailing the per-project costs and labor required to complete the builds for the season.See that buildings are appropriately winterized and staged at BRS for access the following season.DOCUMENTATION AND TRACKING (20%)
Oversee end-of-season inventory of tools, shop equipment, materials, and necessary maintenance items for all Specialty Construction crews.Produce a report detailing completed projects in Mobile Asset Build and Rehab.Provide a list reviewing the status of the mobile building fleet; include details of recommended building repairs to be completed the following season.Contribute operational details to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document.Debrief with the BRS Manager at the end of the season; highlight successes, challenges, outcomes, and recommended directions for the following season.GENERAL (10%)
Keep regular business hours and an online presence as outlined by the BRS ManagerMaintain an awareness of the event timeline and plan for and organize work accordingly.Ensure communications are prompt and professional and that needed discretion is maintained.Read and abide by the rules and codes of conduct as described in the NVO Manager Manual and DPW Handbook.Be familiar with and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies.Submit expense reports and receipts, ensuring forms are complete and submitted on time (within 30 days of transaction).Stay up to date with email correspondence and departmental communications. Distribute any relevant information to crewmembers in a timely fashion.Attend and support crew attendance at daily Morning Meetings.Participate in Managers’ Meetings, create reports, and maintain related correspondence.Support the collection and submission of staff working hours for bi-weekly payroll.Ensure that paychecks are distributed to the crew on time.Be familiar and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies.Support the Specialty Construction crew in the planning and execution of LNT and Waste disposal plans.Monitor the well-being of staff, setting manageable work expectations.Monitor personal well-being, be aware of work expectations and proactively address any concerns with the BRS Manager.Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader directing people as they work, instructing and sharing skills as necessary.Assume responsibility for and ensure that all documentation noted above, as well as any additional reports, meet the standards outlined and shared by the BRS Manager. Work with Specialty Construction managers to maintain continuity in what and how work is documented.Perform other duties as assigned.LEARNING AND TEACHING

REQUIRED
Advanced experience managing large construction projects, including construction schedule, project design, budget oversight, and crew management.Extensive knowledge of construction methods and / or structural engineering.Experience in, or working knowledge of, metal fabrication, and residential or commercial electrical and plumbing.Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead by example, motivate teams, and work with a mixed skill labor force of staff and volunteers.Proficiency in 3d CAD programs such as SketchUp, and the ability to produce working drawings for production.Experience with Google Products (Gmail, Sheets, Docs).High computer literacy with the motivation to adopt and utilize a variety of applications as required.Experience supervising major projects in remote wilderness and / or desert environments.Familiarity with Burning Man and with event-based production work.Clearly and concisely communicates verbally and through written correspondence. Tailors communication to the receiving party with appropriate professionalism.Experienced and comfortable with using 2-way radios.Instills and applies order and cleanliness to the work environment and pays careful attention to detail in the handling of important information.Effectively manages own time; highly organized, able to prioritize, detail-oriented, and motivated.Able to recognize the need for and keep confidentiality.Physically fit and able to lift heavy objects (minimum 50 pounds) safely.Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, and low to no visibility at times.Experience managing volunteers with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations.Relocate to live on-site at BRS, outside Gerlach, seasonally for the duration of your employment.Honest and ethical with a dedication to the Burning Man principles and behavioral standards.PREFERRED

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position :
From March - April is $25.00 per hour.From April - October is $1300.00 per week.From October - October is $25.00 per hour.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
