POSITION SUMMARY
The Youth Opportunity program (YOP) Summer Crew Leader provides supervision and mentoring, with a combination of education and job skills, to the YOP youth workers on summer projects on the reservation. The YOP fosters valuable lessons of responsibility, teamwork, and life skills with a focus on promoting education, traditional culture, Northern Paiute language, and acquiring job skills to participants. With the assistance of the Summer Crew Leader, youth participants will learn to respect and protect the environment in which they live. Additionally, the YOP Summer Crew Leader will support Culture and Heritage (C&H) youth activities, language curriculum, and events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The YOP Summer Crew Leader position requires physical aptitude, mental fortitude, and a high level of comfort in the outdoors
  • Guide a crew of teenage youth through five weeks of outdoor work experience
  • Coordinate with BPT Education Project and C&H on job activities for YOP participants
  • Provide transportation to and supervision of youth, with a focus on safety and accountability for all YOP participants (per applicable pandemic restrictions)
  • Clean and organize supplies, use areas, etc. (as needed or required)
  • Must be able to provide leadership to youth and take charge of behavioral situations and implement required disciplinary consequences
  • The position is multi-faceted and may be demanding at times getting supplies, transporting youth (as allowed with covid-19 restricitons), discipline, encouragement, and completing a project
  • Exhibit excellent judgment
  • Must have strong organizational skills and assist with document collection, including the completion of time sheets, and submit to Supervisor in a timely manner
  • Ability to write reports describing summer project progress
  • Local travel as required for summer activities and projects
  • Support staff and community volunteers with language and traditional culture education curriculum, activities and outreach
  • Provide support in the implementation of traditional culture and tribal language in program activities
  • Cell phone use limited to work related and emergent calls while on duty
  • Must attend staff language classes and exhibit increased proficiency in Northern Paiute language and traditional culture

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at time of hire and be qualified to drive tribal vehicles
  • Must submit to and pass a UA drug test and criminal background checks, including fingerprinting
  • Must sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Must acquire CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Must acquire blood borne pathogen certification
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Quality characteristics that would be positive role model for our youth
  • Observe the milieu to make sure it is safe at all times for YOP participants, staff, and others
  • Experience in working with youth, in a professional/paraprofessional setting
  • Assure YOP participants respect themselves and others while in the program using frequent positive reinforcement techniques
  • Must be able to take charge of behavioral situations that may arise and document, as needed, and implement any required disciplinary consequences

OTHER DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to work as a team player in planning, coordination, and implementation of summer projects, language and traditional cultural education, and community outreach events.

Indian preference will be given to candidates showing proof of enrollment in a federally recognized tribe. In the absence of Indian applicants meeting the qualifications as listed above, all applicants not entitled to or who fail to claim Indian Preference, will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, political preference, age religion, or national origin.
