Job Title: Behavioral Health Technician

Location: Independence, MO (Kansas City area)

Department: Rapid Access Unit

Employment Type: Part Time

Shifts: Saturday & Sunday Overnight (7pm-7am)
*Shift differential (additional pay) included*

As a Behavioral Health Technician you will play a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing mental health crises or substance abuse issues. Our Techs work under the supervision of licensed professionals to provide emotional support, monitor patient behavior, and assist with daily living activities. Additionally, they may help facilitate group therapy sessions, lead recreational activities, and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Support

  • Provide emotional support and validation to patients in crisis
  • Monitor patient behavior, mood, and emotional state
  • Assist patients with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Help patients develop coping skills and strategies to manage their symptoms

Safety and Risk Management

  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients
  • Identify and report potential safety risks or hazards
  • Intervene in crisis situations, such as suicidal or violent behavior
  • Assist with de-escalation techniques to reduce conflict

Documentation and Communication

  • Document patient behavior, progress, and any incidents or concerns
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and treatment teams
  • Provide updates on patient status and progress to licensed professionals
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care

Group and Activity Leadership

  • Lead or co-lead group therapy sessions, educational programs, or recreational activities
  • Develop and implement activity plans to promote patient engagement and socialization
  • Encourage patient participation and engagement in group activities

Professional Development and Training

  • Participate in ongoing training and education to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Stay up-to-date on best practices, policies, and procedures
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and seminars to enhance professional development

Education and/or Experience Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Preferred but not required – Experience and/or degree in a Human Services field

Physical Requirements:
ADA Consideration - Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (exerts up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (exists 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Repetitive movements of hands, fingers, and arms for typing and/or writing during work shift.

Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
