The Burrillville School Department is seeking a candidate who holds certification as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Rhode Island to serve as an RN/Teacher Assistant in the Early Learning Center (Integrated PreSchool Program) located within the Burrillville High School. This position will commence at the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Job Title: Registered Nurse/Teacher Assistant
This position is part of the AFSCME Council 94, Local 2231 (ParaProfessional Union)
Summary: The Preschool Registered Nurse/Teacher Assistant position is a unique role that combines nursing duties with instructional support responsibilities in the Integrated Special Education Preschool Program. This individual will work alongside teachers and paraprofessionals to provide skilled medical care and assistance to students as required, while also serving as an instructional aide when no acute nursing care is needed.
Primary Nursing Responsibilities:
- Administer prescribed medication per physician orders via oral, G-tube, injection and/or nebulizer routes
- Provide skilled nursing treatments such as catheterization, wound care, diabetes management
- Monitor students with chronic conditions (e.g. seizures, asthma, allergies)
- Conduct vision, hearing, scoliosis and other mandated health screenings
- Maintain accurate and compliant medical records per nursing standards
- Provide health education and training to staff on medical conditions, treatments and emergency protocols
- Respond to illness, injuries and medical emergencies following nursing process
Primary Teacher Assistant Responsibilities:
- Assist lead special education and general education teachers in implementing IEP/lesson plans
- Provide individualized academic, behavioral and self-care support for students with IEPs
- Facilitate inclusion by supporting students' active participation in general education activities
- Gather data and document progress towards IEP goals across multiple settings
- Prepare adapted materials and assistive technology per student needs
- Implement applied behavior analysis strategies and positive behavior supports
- Supervise and facilitate peer interactions during classroom activities, meals and recess
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program
- Minimum 2 years of pediatric/school nursing experience preferred
- Current Registered Nurse license in good standing in the State of Rhode Island
- Knowledge of federal/state laws and regulations for special education
- Experience working with students with disabilities
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills
- CPR/AED/First Aid certified
- Mandatory de-escalation and physical intervention training
