QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and Abilities:

1. Knowledge Of:
Safe practices concerning school bus transportation.
Applicable sections of the KAR and other applicable laws.
Health and safety regulations.
Basic understanding of the developmental needs of young
children.

2. Ability To:
Maintain proper records and documentation.
Assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as
required.
Understand and relate to children with special needs.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships
with others.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Lift students according to established guidelines.
Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
Observe health and safety regulations.
Relate to children.
Stand on feet for 30 minutes - 1 hour.
Work successfully in a team relationship with building administrators,
teachers, parents, advocate, and operational staff.

3. Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, high school
certificate of completion, G.E.D. certificate, or demonstrated progress
toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.

Student monitors must be enrolled in the middle or high school.

4. Minimum of middle school age to be monitor; sixteen years of age
minimum to receive financial compensation.

5. Must pass an initial physical, as demonstrated by a physical form
completed by a doctor that may be designated by the Board, and a
tuberculosis test as required and specified by Kentucky laws and
regulations.

6. Completion of annual training as required in 702 KAR 5:150 (2).

7. Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent or Board may
find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
Secondary supervision by Principals and
Preschool Program Director

SUPERVISES: Preschool Students

BASIC FUNCTION: Assist school driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required by 702 KAR 5:150.

REPRESENTATIVE PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Uses discipline strategies (e.g., proximity, discussion, write-ups for principals) to assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on school bus; monitors and assists students while bus is in operation.

2. Consults with and assists bus driver in documentation of student information, recordkeeping and completing route surveys.

3. Assists driver in assuring seat belts, harnesses and wheel chair clamps are secured as required.

4. Assists parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinates seating of pre-kindergarten students as required by State Transportation Guidelines.

5. Communicates with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and behavior as appropriate.

6. Maintains current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.

7. Assists handicapped children on and off the bus and escorts children across street upon return home; lifts children as required; assures responsible adult meets students leaving the bus.

8. Attends in-service meetings and training courses as assigned to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.

9. Responsibilities Specific to HCPS Assignment:
A. Collects and supervises return of personal items left on bus by
students.
B. Picks children up from classroom teacher; monitors children from the
time they are picked up until they are delivered to the proper
person at the bus stop.
C. Conducts a head count of preschool students for which responsible as
students enter and exit bus.
D. Follows District procedures in case the parent is not present for
delivery of the child.
E. Provides developmentally-appropriate instruction in preschool safety
issues.
F. Provides positive adult role model.
G. Lunchroom procedures, when applicable:
1. Models hand washing before handling food;
2. Helps students develop and observe proper dining habits, both in
terms of etiquette and nutrition;
3. Assists preschoolers with the serving of food, use of utensils,
and opening of milk cartons, condiments, etc., when needed;
4. Circulates between the tables during the meal period so as to be
available to help children who need help and to resolve any minor
problems that arise;
5. Calls immediately for principal or an attending teacher in the
event of any that appears to be of more than momentary disruption;
6. Involves children in non-punitive assistance with meals, where
feasible (e.g., clearing table; orderly disposal of food waste,
trays, and utensils; wiping up spills);
7. Establishes a pleasant social atmosphere where students are
engaged in conversation with staff and other children;
8. Organizes groups for orderly entry to/dismissal from lunch.

10. Performs such other tasks within reason as may be assigned by the Superintendent or other supervisors.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work hours/days to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
