SUPERVISES:

All high school and middle school coaches/directors/advisors of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, and students in the high school and middle school.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education:

Master’s Degree or higher Certification or licensure: South Dakota Teacher’s certificate, South Dakota Administrative Endorsement (preferred).

2. Experience Desired:               

He/She shall have had a minimum of three years’ experience as a teacher and director/coach and have demonstrated proficiency in the leadership (i.e., supervision and administering) of school activity programs.  He/She shall demonstrate the ability to establish rapport with administrators, staff, students, and the public.

3. Physical:         

This position requires constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination, hearing, speaking, walking, writing, and driving. Frequent repetitive motion with wrists, hands, and fingers. A valid South Dakota driver’s license and the ability to drive a car.

4. Other:             

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management.  Competence in completing assessments, developing interventions and consulting with others. Knowledge of state, conference and local rules, regulations and guidelines. Demonstrated ability in establishing and maintaining good public relations with community, civic, and professional organizations. Adhere to District’s Policies and Procedures.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:     

1. Organize and maintain a program of athletics and extra-curricular activities in keeping with the aims and purposes of education as conceived by the Superintendent and Board of Education by:

  • Directing, coordinating, evaluating and providing appropriate supervision for all sports and activities, keeping a balance between academics, activities and athletics and in providing an equal access of opportunity for all students.

  • Interviewing, hiring, and evaluating the various members of the coaching/directing staff in collaboration with building principals and activities team members, and making recommendations to the building principals regarding assignment, retention, non-retention and reassignment of staff.

  • Making necessary arrangements for athletic/activity contracts, publicity, obtaining and rating officials and judges, and arranging for necessary personnel to host all extra-curricular activities (scorekeepers, ticket takers, police protection, etc.).

  • Reporting on eligibility requirements and compile any required athletic/activity reports for the SDHSAA and the West Central School District.

  • Arranging for physical examinations of athletes each spring.

  • Coordinating with the building principals, the necessary information relative to the athletic/activity insurance program and activity tickets.

  • Handle all discipline situations associated with activities keeping the building principal informed of actions taken.

  • Promote a system of recognition and publicity of participants and programs to the media.

  • Work with the various booster clubs ensuring a good working relationship between patrons and coaches/directors.

  • Coordinate athletic/activity travel arrangements, including meals and lodging.

  • Interpret and recommend actions to comply with the conference and state athletic/activity association rules and the policies of the West Central Board of Education.

  • Serve as the District’s voting member to the conference and state athletic/activity meetings and serve as the meet director whenever our school hosts a conference, invitational, or state event.

  • Account for all monies handled in accordance with prescribed local and state procedures, including approving all expenditures regarding the activity programs.

2. Be responsible for the purchases of equipment and supplies for all activities of extra-curricular activities acquired through bids and/or quotations.

3. Direct and coordinate the scheduling of all student activities within the school calendar subject to the approval of the building principals and Superintendent by April 15 of each year.

4. Supervise the inventory, storage and care of athletic/activity equipment and supplies.

5. Provide communication with custodians in reference to practice dates, meets/games, and facility usage and serve as a liaison between coaches/directors and custodians.

6. Supervise the issuance of activity awards, banquets, and parent or booster club activities.

7. Supervise weight room activities and coordinate weight room usage.

8. Handle the scheduling of all District facilities by school officials and outside organizations or individuals.

9. Work in cooperation with the building principals and maintenance staff; ensure that athletic facilities are in proper repair and that building facilities are appropriate for related extra-curricular activities.

10. Maintain a master schedule of facilities for the entire School District.

11. Communicate the scheduling of events on the master schedule with the parties involved.

12. Submit an annual budget, and required reports, including personnel and business affairs.

13. Participate in planning of new facilities.

14. Promotes a positive image of the West Central School District.

15. Performs other duties as assigned.
