Job Summary:

The Mitchell School District is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented K-12 Business Manager to oversee the financial operations of the district. This position is responsible for managing the district's budget, accounting, payroll, purchasing, insurance, and other business-related functions. The Business Manager will work closely with the Superintendent, school administrators, human resources, and the school board to ensure the fiscal stability and efficient operation of the district, ultimately supporting the educational success of all students.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management: Develop, implement, and monitor the annual budget; ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines and legal requirements; prepare financial reports and statements for the Superintendent and School Board.
  • Accounting and Reporting: Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and cash management; ensure accurate and timely financial record-keeping; coordinate annual audits.
  • Payroll and Benefits: Manage the district's payroll processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations; administer employee benefits programs.
  • Purchasing and Contracts: Oversee the district's purchasing processes, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with procurement policies; manage vendor relationships and contracts.
  • Risk Management and Insurance: Manage the district's insurance programs and risk management strategies.
  • Facilities and Operations Support: Collaborate with the Superintendent and other administrators on matters related to facilities management, transportation, and food services from a financial perspective.
  • Policy and Compliance: Ensure the district's business operations comply with all relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and school board policies.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Serve as a key financial advisor to the Superintendent, school administrators, and the School Board; communicate financial information clearly and effectively to various stakeholders.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: May supervise business office staff, depending on the organizational structure.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required. A Master's degree is preferred.  
  • Significant experience in financial management, preferably in a public sector or educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting standards (GASB).
  • Experience with budget development, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Proficiency in financial management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.  
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated integrity and ethical conduct.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a K-12 school district.
  • Knowledge of South Dakota school finance regulations.
  • Experience with specific school district financial software.
