What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Guidance Counselor 2025-26 position at Butler Academy?
At Butler Academy, or BA for short, we’re committed to building something extraordinary, and we won’t settle for anything less than the most talented, innovative, passionate, and committed educators we can find. Our goal is to find a Middle & Secondary School Counselor who is dedicated to closing the achievement gap by fostering a dynamic, supportive learning environment where every scholar is embraced and uplifted.
Role:
The successful Middle & Secondary School Counselor will understand and embody Butler Academy's compassionate school model, where supporting scholars’ social-emotional learning (SEL) is as critical as their academic and career planning. This individual will strike a balance between career and college guidance, and the daily, meaningful work of supporting students’ SEL needs through trauma-informed practices and relational connection. The counselor will also play a vital role in fostering a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for all scholars while collaborating with families, staff, and community partners to ensure holistic support for students’ well-being.
Responsibilities:
The Middle & Secondary School Counselor will:
- Provide comprehensive support to students by addressing academic, career, and social-emotional needs through individual and group counseling.
- Actively promote students’ physical, emotional, and mental well-being as part of daily practices.
- Assist with career exploration, college application guidance, and post-secondary planning, ensuring every scholar has a clear and supported pathway to success.
- Implement preventative programs to build resilience, promote SEL, and cultivate positive relationships.
- Lead crisis intervention efforts and provide community resource referrals for scholars and families.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to create a trauma-sensitive learning environment aligned with Butler Academy’s mission and values.
- Balance administrative duties, such as managing PowerSchool and academic schedules, with hands-on student engagement and SEL support.
- Foster connected communities and a positive school climate by promoting safe, stable, and nurturing relationships for all scholars.
- Serve as an advocate for policies and practices that align with a compassionate, trauma-informed framework.
Our Model:
- Grades served: K–9 in the 2025–26 school year, with plans to add one grade per year until K–12 is reached in 2028.
- Two classes per grade level with a maximum of 20 scholars per class.
- Year-round academic calendar with 20 days of annual professional development, including Responsive Classroom training each summer.
What You’ll Need:
- A master’s degree, valid counseling certification, and a minimum of four years of successful school counseling experience, preferably with middle or secondary students.
- An unwavering commitment to supporting students’ academic, social-emotional, and career development needs.
- A trauma-informed and strengths-based approach to counseling.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance administrative responsibilities with direct student support.
- A belief in the potential of every scholar and a commitment to their success.
- A growth mindset and a passion for ongoing professional development.
If you’re ready to join a team dedicated to transforming lives and redefining what’s possible for all scholars, we invite you to apply. Please include a cover letter describing why you're a good fit for Butler Academy.
