Nature of Work

Preside over pre-decree and post-decree matters involving domestic relations related issues. Hear and decide matters involving domestic violence. Hear and decide issues related to Child Support. Perform any other duties directed by the Judges in accordance with Civil Rules.

Essential Functions

  • Improving the efficiency of the court’s caseload by hearing both Post Decree and pretrial motions. Performing other duties as assigned by the Judges.
  • Controlling and maintaining courtroom procedure and conduct of attorneys and litigants, and issues. Monitoring, managing and controlling hearing times to ensure that cases are heard as scheduled. Maintaining record of court proceedings by electronic recording for court reporter transcription.
  • Reviewing and approving documents filed in assigned cases, maintaining fairness and impartiality, and writing legally defensible findings and recommendations based upon the Rules of Evidence and legal conclusions based on Ohio law.
  • Conducting hearings on Domestic Violence and Dating Violence Civil Protection Orders, child support enforcement orders.
  • Maintaining fairness and impartiality and writing legally defensible decisions. Staying current on new or amended statutes, procedures and case law. Conducting legal research, and analyzing legal decisions, cases and documents.
  • Scheduling and resulting hearings and motions in the court’s case management system. Experience in Proware preferred but not required.
  • Determining spousal support issues, considering the statutory factors.
  • Conduct mediation in accordance with all rules in place for the State of Ohio and any Local Rules.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting speaking and teaching engagements on behalf of the Domestic Relations Court
  • Complete required credits including Judicial College credits within a two-year period pursuant to Rule X of the Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio.

  • Familiar with computer and computer programs including, but not limited to, Microsoft Windows, other Microsoft programs including Microsoft Word, Puritas Springs, and Family Law Software.
  • Familiar with Webex.
  • Ability to research complicated legal issues; ability to effectively use the internet resources for online research.
  • Knowledge of both substantive and procedural law, including the Rules of Evidence, the Rules of Civil Procedure, and Rules of Superintendence, as well as common and statutory law.
  • Ability to apply the law in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to maintain a judicial temperament and to render judicial decisions fairly and evenly.
  • Ability to apply legal principles, specialized knowledge, and logical thinking to individual cases and problems.
  • Ability to decide an issue and render judgment in an efficient, decisive manner.
  • Ability to present material clearly in written and oral form.
  • Hearing ability sufficient to converse with other individuals both in person and by telephone; ability to hear recording on transcription devices.
  • Speaking ability sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person or by telephone.

While performing duties of this job the Magistrate frequently

  • Sits for extended periods of time while hearing cases, conducting research and performing other responsibilities.
  • Communicate verbally with others in person and by telephone. Vision demands include normal vision requirements, including viewing computer screen requiring close focus.

Minimum Education and Qualifications

Juris Doctor Degree and licensed to practice law in Ohio with minimum of five (5) years’ experience in practicing law, plus:

1. Ability to meet the legal qualifications and requirements for a magistrate

2. Ability to file annual financial disclosure statement with the Ohio Supreme Court

3. Experience practicing in a domestic relations court.

4. Independent judgment and experience working with the public.

5. Professional conduct and attire.

Licensure and Certification Requirements

Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and in good standing.
