Position Summary: Under the administrative supervision of the Public Works Engineer, the Engineering Technician II acts construction inspector, assists in surveying, and as an assistant to the Engineers.
Responsibilities include assisting the public and townships with technical questions, inspection of construction activities, preparation of construction and design. The Engineering Technician II exercises independent judgment.
Examples of Work (Essential Functions):
- Assists customers and townships on general questions, provides information on the telephone, by email, or at the counter;
- Works with townships and cities to coordinate construction activities;
- Assists with making engineering calculations and preparation of construction plans for road and bridge projects, landfill, facilities;
- Checks field construction with plans and specifications;
- Assists survey crew in verifying the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites;
- Calculates heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain;
- Prepares and maintains sketches, maps, reports, field notes to describe, work performed;
- Coordinates construction project activities with local units of government, utilities companies, emergency provides, postal service, school systems and the public;
- Inspects asphalt, concrete, grading, road, storm water, bridge projects;
- Keeps diaries and field books, prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, field notes to describe work performed;
- Produces mechanical and computer aided drafting using AutoCAD;
- Serves as project construction manager for road and bridge construction;
- Submits construction reports and test reports;
- Tests materials (i.e., concrete, aggregates, wood products, etc.);
- Maintains and updates filing, mailing, database systems, and records, either manually or using computer-related software to update information;
- Uses software to enter and produce correspondence, logs, reports, tables, and schedules; create maps and analyzes data;
- Performs work in a safe manner;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Required Education and/or Experience: Two years related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D.; or Associate’s degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position. Experience in construction, materials testing, surveying and drafting, computer aided drafting.
Preferred Education and/or Experience: Three years related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D.; or Associate’s degree and one year experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in construction management or closely related field.

- Ability to operate all office equipment and all field surveying and testing equipment;
- Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties;
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;

Problem Solving: Problem solving exists in this position. Problems include coordination project activities to minimize impacts on public agencies and the general public.
Decision Making: Frequent decision making exists in this position. Decisions include making construction plan changes to meet site specific constraints. Also includes giving best advice on Township questions.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.
Supervision: Supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.
Personal Relationships: Frequent contact with other county departments, KDOT, the general public, Townships, contractors and consultants.
