What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal Design Engineer position at BVI Medical?
Purpose
The Principal Design Engineer is responsible for leading mechanical design activities including 3D/2D CAD design, mechanical engineering technology development, new product development and line extensions, and sustaining activities in support of business objectives. In addition, the Engineer is responsible for supporting product development activities including design control documentation and testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Manages mechanical designs of new products, line extensions, and existing products. Focus areas in both product design as well as equipment/fixtures/tooling design concentration(s) while working with the cross-functional team on input requirements.
- Generates and maintains engineering documentation including component, subassembly, and final assembly drawings, tolerance analyses, and specifications.
- Design and develop design input requirements, design output requirements, verification protocols and reports, and other design control documents.
- Manages either directly or indirectly engineers assisting the projects and providing technical expertise and mentorship.
- Leads product design driving DFA/DFM (Design for assembly and manufacturing) supporting product and process development with external vendors and internal manufacturing sites.
- Effectively generates design concepts, prototypes and demonstrates proof-of-concept.
- Applies analytical skills including statistics, DOE (design of Experiments) experimental design and/or Six Sigma
- Interacts with suppliers to obtain quotes and assess component manufacturability from a wide variety of sources, including injection molding, CNC machining, die/metal forming, and formed metal tubular components. .
- Collaborates on cross-functional teams to successfully complete assigned projects.
- Effectively communicates activity status, challenges and mitigation plans with key stakeholders.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Possesses high engineering acumen specifically in 3D CAD design including Solidworks, PTC Creo, AutoCAD.
- Proficient in Visio, Minitab, and Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Proven experience driving technical leadership in the design of surgical devices utilizing plastic, disposable device design including DFA/DFM (Design for assembly and manufacturing)
- In-depth knowledge of rapid-prototyping and volume manufacturing processes including 3D printing, CNC machining, and injection molding. Ability to build prototypes and critically evaluate performance of design concepts and device prototypes
- Extensive knowledge in analyzing and solving problems in a disciplined fashion, ensuring clear understanding of the root cause(s) and efficient recommendations for resolution
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to drive CAD designs to bring early stage concepts through to cost-effective manufacturing and sourcing
- Ability to independently lead technical assessment(s) and resolve complex issues with a high degree of initiative.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and clients
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field and 10 years’ relevant experience in medical device development; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Experience with expertise in implant technology, disposable devices and capital equipment
- Experience generating and maintaining design output drawings/specification including drafting, tolerancing, and Design for manufacture/assembly.
- Extensive use of keyboard requiring repetitive motion of fingers.
- Extensive use of telephone and face-to-face communication requiring accurate perception of speech.
- Regular sitting for extended periods of time.
- May require occasional travel.
