BVU Authority (BVUA) is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Accountant I.
Primary Duties
Perform plant accounting and accounts payable functions for Electric, Water, & Wastewater systems.
Secondary Duties
Backup to payroll functions for Electric, Water, & Wastewater systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PLANT ACCOUNTING
· Reconcile and process month end closing for the Work Order Management System (WORKS).
· Calculate overhead allocations.
· Prepare and reconcile monthly utility taxes.
· Process various stats reports as well as TVA invoicing reconciliation to general ledger.
· Maintain and reconcile DFMS Inventory System.
· Audit and close construction jobs for Wastewater in WORKS System.
· Reconcile accounts receivable schedules for Wastewater.
· Prepare monthly journal entries.
ACCOUNTS PAYABLE
· Process and distribute invoices for approval.
· Review and post all purchasing and receiving batches.
· Prepare weekly accounts payable check runs and ensure all invoices are paid in a timely manner.
· Prepare customer refund checks.
· Prepare 1099’s (mail and file with IRS).
· Enter daily cash receipts and balance monthly.
· Prepare monthly journal entries.
· Scan checks for digital records.
PAYROLL
· Process bi-weekly payroll and reports.
· Processing annual performance bonus payroll.
· Report employee contribution payments to Virginia Retirement System monthly.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Must have working knowledge of recognized accounting procedures and practices, particularly as related to accounts payable and payroll accounting.
· Must have the ability to communicate effectively with all departments, as well as with others associated with the function of the accounting department.
· Must be able to perform assigned accounting functions.
· Must be able to use a computer and all other office equipment, as necessary.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Associate’s degree in Accounting or Business is required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration preferred.
- Three years' experience in accounting or a related field is preferred.
- Ongoing training will be required as necessitated by developments in accounting and software programs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Duties contained within this position are primarily performed indoors with extended periods of sitting.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, climb, and perform all other physical movements necessary for the essential functions of the job.
- Must be able to work weekends and evenings as required.
- Dress is business casual.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
Travel is limited; however, travel will be required when completing the TVPPA Certified Utility Accountant Certification Program.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $23.00 - $26.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
