BWXT is looking for a Research Engineer for it's Lynchburg Technology Center (LTC) in Virginia!
Job duties include engineering support and leadership on a variety of projects including: material characterizations to support our on-site nuclear reactor component manufacturing facility, design of specialized test equipment/experiments in support of fuel development, planning and implementing laboratory upgrades, managing laboratory projects including cost and schedule. Hands-on laboratory work including working directly with radioactive materials is required. Our group handles a wide variety of analyses and instruments/equipment/methods. Experience with specific equipment and methods is not required, but a desire to learn new techniques with a hands-on attitude is a must.
An active DOE clearance is strongly desired, with the ability to obtain one required.

It is desired that the applicant is at a minimum familiar with some of the following, but most importantly is interested in learning the theory and practice of new analytical techniques and processing equipment through hands-on work:
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $77,000.00 and $116,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.

Job Responsibilities
- Assist in selecting, installing, and commissioning of specialized laboratory equipment including high temp. furnaces and analytical instruments.
- Hands-on work with equipment including maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Authoring and support of safety analyses for installation/modification of equipment.
- Routine and customized analyses to resolve nuclear reactor component production issues, typically through qualitative elemental analysis utilizing SEM/EDS and quantitative analysis utilizing electron microprobe.
- Identify and implement new analysis methods including selection of instruments and authoring of technical procedures.
- Work closely with instrument operators to ensure analysis methods/plans are appropriate.
- Author/maintain area operating procedures and technical procedures.
- Interpretation of test data and authoring of technical reports.
- Work directly with radioactive materials in a safe manner.
- Participate in fuel development efforts including process development and characterizations.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related technical field is required.
- Minimum 2 years engineering experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment is required.
- Education experience in a laboratory environment including internshipsmay be considered in lieu of some employment experience.
It is desired that the applicant is at a minimum familiar with some of the following, but most importantly is interested in learning the theory and practice of new analytical techniques and processing equipment through hands-on work:
- Operation of laboratory equipment including furnaces, gloveboxes, physical vapor deposition (PVD) coaters, hot consolidation methods (HIP, direct current sintering).
- Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS).
- X-ray diffraction analysis.
- Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS, aka microprobe) for quantitative microanalysis.
- Metallographic sample preparation techniques.
- Weld attribute evaluation using standard microscopy techniques.
- Heat treatment processes and operation of high temperature furnaces.
- General laboratory practices including working with hazardous chemicals.
- Quality assurance best practices including documentation and handling of data/records.
