Job Title: Adjunct - Teaching - English (General Education Literature)

Position Start Date: July 1, 2025

Required Degree: MA in English, MFA in Creative Writing, or master's degree is comparable field.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience: College-level literature course instruction.

Duties/Expectations: 

Duties/Expectations: Teach one or more of the following General Education literature courses:

  • ENGL 230: Studies in Literature
  • ENGL 232: Shakespeare
  • ENGL 235: Studies in American Literature
  • ENGL 236: Studies in British Literature
  • ENGL 238: The Bible as Literature
  • ENGL 268: Literature of the Latter-day Saints
  • Course descriptions are available in the BYU Course Catalog. Each course has required learning outcomes and recommended assignments as set by the English Department.

 

Instructor Availability: Applicants must be available to teach in-person classes on the BYU Provo Campus and are expected to hold at least three office hours each week, share an office with up to two additional adjunct faculty and be responsive to student inquiries in a timely manner. Office hours may be held in person and/or online and instructor must reside in the state of Utah.

 

Training and Meetings: Adjunct faculty may be required to attend training prior to the start of teaching assignment, depending on prior teaching experience and familiarity with BYU's writing program. Training for new courses is available annually. Additional employee training may be offered periodically (EEO, accessibility, LMS, etc.). Adjunct faculty do not attend regular faculty meetings and are not required to participate in research or citizenship responsibilities. However, adjunct faculty are invited to participate in ad hoc workshops and events as coordinated by the English Department's adjunct faculty liaison.

 

Performance Reviews: Adjunct faculty receive performance reviews annually, which may include the following: review of student ratings and course materials, teaching observations, and a self-assessment. In addition, course coordinators may review course materials and recommend changes to align with department standards. Syllabi and student work may be used for program assessment purposes.

 

Teaching Load and Future Employment Opportunities:  In the BYU English Department, adjunct faculty may teach up to three courses/semester and/or one course/spring-summer, depending on other BYU concurrent employment and department needs. Adjunct writing faculty are hired on a semester-to-semester basis.

 

This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.
