Basic Function
This role is intended to benefit the overall productivity of the service department and to provide a steppingstone position for a willing candidate. The candidate will do this by participating in on-the-job training assisting service technicians in basic service tasks to learn key skills for a future technician position. The Technician Apprentice will work under direct supervision of the Shop Foreman.
Critical Roles
- Assist technicians as needed
- Complete the total number of John Deere University credits as required.
- Learn and perform basic service tasks as assigned.
- Develop an understanding of the service department operations and how the dealer business system is utilized.
- Develop skills in removal, disassembly, and reconditioning of components.
- May perform pre-delivery set-up and inspection on new equipment.
- Responsible for complete and thorough documentation of diagnostics and repairs performed on work orders and on time submittal of information.
- Maintains a clean work area and performs work in a neat and orderly fashion.
- Follows all safety rules and regulations while performing work assignments and adhere to all policies and procedures as specified in company manuals.
- Be willing at times to do miscellaneous tasks as a utility member of the service group in a professional and efficient manner.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A strong desire to learn by listening to others and participating in the repair process
- Ability to assemble and perform maintenance functions on equipment
- Experience working cooperatively in a team environment
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds regularly.
- Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk with the ability to stand for an extensive amount of time.
- Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Ability to move or hold arms and hands in small areas, while utilizing tools, feeling for objects, or working with controls for an extensive amount of time.
- Ability to use tools that vibrate for an extensive amount of time.
- Ability to climb up and down equipment.
- Able to sit for extensive amounts of time in a vehicle when travelling.
- Ability to work in extreme weather/temperature conditions
Education and Experience Required
- Graduation from related diesel technology program preferred
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent technician experience required
- Applicant must pass a physical drug screening and possess a valid driver’s license.
