Job Description And Duties
This job posting is being used to fill a permanent, full-time Captain, Adult Institution position. Captains can be assigned to any of the following program areas:

  • Complex I (Facility A & B)
  • Complex II (Facility C & D)
  • Central Services
  • Health Care Access Unit

Valley State Prison is in the central San Joaquin Valley about 30 miles north of Fresno and close to Yosemite National Park. Surrounding communities are affordable and offer excellent educational opportunities.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with department staff, other agencies, and other stakeholders
  • Advanced knowledge of custody operations/programs, discipline of incarcerated persons, departmental rules and regulations, and incarcerated persons’ classification
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and leadership skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to thoroughly complete work assignments under the pressure of established deadlines
  • Ability to independently plan, organize, direct, review, and audit the work of assigned staff
  • Ability to provide training to institutional staff
  • Ability to evaluate staff performance and implement the Progressive Disciplinary Process to improve or correct staff performance/behavior issues
  • Knowledge of EEO policies and procedures and staff hiring
  • Extensive knowledge of computer application usage, records retention, and statistical reporting
  • Shall create and promote an equitable and inclusive workplace where diversity is celebrated and valued
