What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard (Seasonal) position at CA State Parks - Millerton Lake SRA?
This is the recruiting and training level for this series. Under supervision, incumbents detect and rescue persons or vessels in distress; take command in emergencies; perform first-aid and resuscitation procedures; notify headquarters of accidents and rescues; prepare reports; remove hazards; assist the public and advise visitors of rules and regulations; operate, inspect and perform maintenance on emergency rescue equipment and vehicles; operate mobile and handheld radios; and other related duties.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid driver license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Possession of
(1) a Department of Parks and Recreation first-aid certificate or equivalent and
(2) a Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate or equivalent.
An approved Department of Health Emergency Technician certificate may be substituted for both the required certificates. Applicants who do not possess these certificates will be admitted to the examination but they must produce evidence of the certificates before they can be considered for an appointment.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: First-aid procedures and resuscitation methods.
Ability to: Swim at a level sufficient to perform lifesaving activities; read and write English at a level appropriate to the class; learn and apply standard first-aid procedures and resuscitation methods; follow directions; remain alert; analyze situations accurately; think and act quickly and take command in emergencies; establish and maintain good working relations; communicate effectively.
SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Willingness to work long and irregular hours, weekends, and holidays; tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Successful completion of the Department of Parks and Recreation seasonal lifeguard training program prior to appointment, June 18 - June 25, 2025, at Lake Perris State Recreation Area (Perris, CA).
