General Statement of Job
The school bus transportation safety assistant aides in transporting students in a safe, efficient and timely manner to and from school.
Salary Pay grade NC04
Reports to Transportation Planner
Essential Job Functions
Makes decisions pertaining to the school bus and the safety of students.
Obeys all mandatory safety regulations for school buses, including evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency.
Maintains applicable physical and dexterity standards.
Maintains knowledge of TIMS-approved bus routes and the students assigned to the bus stops. Ensures safety and care of students boarding, riding and departing the school bus.
Records student counts on 20-day count sheet daily for the Transportation Department to turn in monthly.
Assists bus driver with daily reports and other required reports.
Walks to the back of the bus to disengage the child safety alarm during post-trip inspections.
Must comply with Cabarrus County Schools drug testing policy
Creates and maintains updated seating chart for each assigned run.
Establishes and maintains effective communication and working relationships with school district personnel.
Enforces school rules for eating, drinking and electronic equipment on the bus.
Keeps the school bus clean and free of any items that may present a safety problem.
Assist the bus driver in securing the bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route.
Secures all pre-kindergarten children properly.
Ensures that pre-kindergarten children are released to the parent at the bus stop.
Understands the guidelines in the School Bus Driver and Transportation Safety Assistants Handbook and refers to it periodically for guidance and to answer questions.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
Must be 18 years of age.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Considerable knowledge of operating instructions of the Transportation Department.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of contacts, including school staff, Transportation Department, students, parents, and the general public.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to reason, make judgments and resolve problem situations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters pertaining to the school system and its students.
Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
Ability to maintain a clean school bus.
Ability to complete required reports.
Ability to assist bus driver in visually / physically inspecting the bus as outlined in the Daily Checklist provided by the garage supervisor and ability to walk the bus to disengage the child safety alarm or inspect for children left on the bus.
A Transportation Safety Assistant must be proficient in the English language in order to communicate quickly and effectively in situations relating to the safety of students.
Physical Requirements
Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Continuously required to sit while riding and occasionally required to walk or stand; will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk.
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly in ensuring the safety of the students.
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, school bus equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
Must have minimal levels of eye / hand / foot coordination.
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Requires the ability to talk and / or hear : (talking : expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
Requires sufficient hearing ability to maintain the safety of the school bus. Hearing a forced whispered voice in the better ear at a distance of five feet is considered adequate hearing.
Special Requirements
Depending on the school / site you must hold or be eligible for a NC Dept. of Health and Human Services - Child Care Criminal Background Check and approval letter.
