Hiring range for this position is $42,598.40 - $50,897.60. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 15.
Must be able to work a rotating work schedule, on call, after hours, and weekends. Standard work hours are M-F 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.
General Definition of Work:
Performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work involving the operation of landfill and heavy equipment; informs other operator's daily activities; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Overseeing landfill working area; operating heavy equipment in the operation and maintenance of the landfill; servicing and maintaining equipment.

- Oversees operations of working area of landfill.
- Assigns, schedules and directs work of equipment operators.
- Opens and closes landfill working areas.
- Operates a front end loader tractor, pan, motor grader, compactor, dozer and related equipment in the operation and maintenance of a landfill.
- Inspects slopes and working conditions.
- Operates scale house in attendant's absence.
- Places and compacts refuse and covers with earth.
- Prepares recyclables for shipment as needed.
- Loads vehicles with mulch/compost as needed.
- Help maintain residential drop off area and assist customers as needed.
- Clears land for expansion of landfill, including cutting of trees for disposal and firewood.
- Opens and maintains access roads.
- Services and makes minor repairs to equipment.
- Maintains equipment log, including daily walk around inspection and safety equipment check.
- Operates a variety of small power equipment.
- Assists mechanic with major repairs to heavy equipment as needed.
- Perform weekly facility inspections.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; knowledge of solid waste rules and regulations required by state and federal agencies; The ability to understand site and erosion plans; general knowledge of survey plans; knowledge of proper slope maintenance and erosion control; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge and ability to identify and handle infectious and hazardous waste properly; skill and care in the operation of several types of construction equipment; ability to operate vehicles and equipment fitted with automatic transmission; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
Management Preferences:
- Certified Landfill Operator Certification preferred
- Weighmasters license preferred
- Commercial Driver's License
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of heavy equipment, some experience in mechanical equipment repair. Certified Landfill Operator Certification preferred.
Special Requirements:
Possession of appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina is preferred. May require possession of a weighmasters license. Some overtime and after-hours work is required.
Physical Requirements:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
