Hiring range for this position is $49,316.80 - $58,968.00. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 18.
This library is located in Kannapolis, NC.
General Definition of Work:
Performs intermediate professional work for teen and adult services in the Public Services division of the Kannapolis library, which includes programming, outreach, collection development, and readers' advisory. Promotes and exemplifies excellent customer service standards. Serves on the library supervisory team and works collaboratively with other supervisors and managers. Responsible for training, supervision, and evaluation of full time Public Service staff. Additional duties as assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Branch Manager or Library Director. Supervision may be exercised over a small group of subordinate personnel.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Overseeing supervising, and participating in a specific phase or phases of library operations which may include reference, circulation, children's services, or technical services; monitors operations and continuously improves quality, performance and effectiveness of the specific library department; assisting patrons with library services; overseeing the preparation and maintenance of library records and files.

- Responsible for supervising, training, and evaluating staff and has substantial influence in hiring and other employment decisions.
- Interpret policies, procedures, and standards to department staff.
- Prepares and presents programs for children and their families, teens, and/or adults; publicizes those programs.
- Assists patrons with the location, selection, checking in and out of library materials.
- Provides general library services at circulation desk; registers patrons; checks in and out books and other materials; empties book drop.
- Creates and maintains bibliographies for reader's advisory. Creates displays.
- Provides reference and reader's advisory services.
- Assists library patrons with the use of library computers and related technology and equipment.
- Resolves unusual or difficult questions.
- Instructs patrons in the use of library equipment.
- Tracks and reports relevant statistics.
- Oversees the material deselecting process for specific collections.
- Handles financial transactions according to County policy.
- Reshelves books and materials; shelf reads and straightens shelves.
- Assigns or conducts library tours as needed.
- Reviews books and materials; make recommendations for new purchases; makes recommendations on purchase of equipment and/or supplies.
- Troubleshoots minor computer and related peripheral issues.
- Coordinates the activities of volunteers.
- Orders supplies.
- Opens and closes library as assigned.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of modern library science; of reference source material; and of equipment and materials utilized in library operations and as a service to patrons. General knowledge of educational programs for citizens participation in the use of library facilities; of arranging displays of an educational or cultural nature; and of publishing vendors from which to acquire materials, supplies, equipment and services. Working knowledge of office equipment and computers and applicable software applications. Ability to apply modern principles and practices of library science; to use reference materials; to demonstrate the use of library equipment; to solve problems within scope of responsibility; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders, professional groups, associates and the general public; and to speak and write effectively.
Management Preference:
- 3 years of public library experience.
- 1 year of experience as a supervisor .
- 1 year of scheduling experience.
- Enjoys working with people and excels at providing customer service.
- Has excellent communication skills and is skilled at presenting to diverse groups.
- Familiar with reader's advisory practices and a variety of authors and literary topics.
- Comfortable integrating technology and digital methods of service. Night and weekend availability required.
Minimum Education / Experience requirements
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an ALA accredited library school with MLIS and some experience in professional library work.
At the discretion of Management, non-accredited ALA universities/programs may be considered as long as North Carolina Public Library Certification can be obtained. It is the responsibility of the applicant to research the eligibility requirements for the North Carolina Public Library Certification.
Special Requirements:
Eligible for North Carolina Public Library Certification. May require possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina.
Physical Requirements:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
